SIDELIGHTS

Children’s book author and designer Ann Stott grew up in Arlington, Massachusetts. As an art director she designed the 2011 Caldecott Honor book, Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein, and the 2013 Caldecott Medal winner This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen. In her first book, Always, illustrated by Matt Phelan, Stott presents a young boy as her protagonist who asks the question “Do you love me?” The text then goes on to have the boy ask a series of “what if” questions of his mother concerning whether or not she loves him even if, for example, he wears his new sneakers while jumping into puddles or does not eat his peas. “The artwork and the cozy message combine to create a vastly reassuring … tale for little ones,” wrote a Kirkus Reviews contributor. Jane Marino, writing for School Library Journal, called Always “a sweet, understated story.”

I’ll Be There, also illustrated by Phelan, is a book for preschoolers and tells the story of a boy as he goes on a walk with his mother. When he asks her what she did when he was still little, the boy’s mother explains how she took care of him, from bathing and feeding him to reading him stories at bedtime. She then tells him that he is able to do all these things himself now, and the boy tells his mother all the things he thinks he can do for himself. He then questions whether his mother will still take care of him when he is big and receives a reassuring answer. Judith Constantinides, writing in School Library Journal, recommended the book  “as a cozy bedtime story.” A Kirkus Reviews contributor noted “Phelan’s deft use of watercolor, which injects sly humor into the boy’s independent actions.”

Stephen Gilpin serves as the illustrator for Stott’s picture book titled What to Do When You’re Sent to Your Room. Young Ben is sent to his room as punishment so often that he is wallpapering it with sports magazine photos. Ben relates how he fills his time spent in his room, from being productive sorting his baseball card collection to pondering what he wants for his birthday. “Children will enjoy the boy’s creative, matter-of-fact approach to his confinement,” wrote Sally James in School Library Journal, pointing out, however, that parents may be less enthused about a book that tells children how to enjoy themselves while being punished. Want to Play Trucks?, illustrated by Bob Graham, features a white and a black boy playing with toys, one with a dump truck and the other with a ballerina doll. An argument ensues when Jack suggests they play trucks and Alex replies that they can play dolls that drive trucks. The basis for the argument, turns out to be a surprise when readers learn it is about whether or not the ballerina doll will fit into the trucks. The problem is solved when the doll’s tutu is removed. “In both pictures and words, a smart take,” wrote Ilene Cooper in Booklist. Kirkus Reviews contributor noted “the story conveys a positive message about inclusiveness and compromise.”

    BIOGRAPHY

Anne Stott is an indie rock singer/songwriter and actor. Through her writing, recording, and performances, Stott shares a deeply personal and focused presence that travels from introspection to exultation.

Stott claims to be from "everywhere and nowhere", which might be why her music is a world unto itself. Her third album, LOVE NEVER DIES, was called "a stunner" and played on radio stations across the country, charting at #19 on the Jambands/Relix Magazine radio chart. Co-produced by Jon Evans (Tori Amos, Sarah MacLachlan), LOVE NEVER DIES is an eclectic indie rock exploration that ranges from radio ready tracks like "We Are Here", "No Words", and "I've Known Your Name Before" to a three act chant inspired dreamscape, a spoken word rocker and a lullaby ending.

PENNSYLVANIA, produced by Jack Petruzzelli (Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, Joan Osborne), is an album of restlessness and desire, a direct hit to the heart and mind of its listeners. The UMass Lowell Connector said, "Anne's music speaks more of...the conflicts were made of rather than the conflicts we've made."

As an actor, Stott has worked on numerous productions directed by Obie winning theater artist David Drake: Kryla in POOR SUPERMAN, Mrs Gibbs in OUR TOWN, and Jack/Ernest in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST. She has appeared in plays across Cape Cod and in New York City, as well as in several short films. The Provincetown Banner said, "Anne Stott dazzles with pure seduction...Even with her back turned she commands the stage."

Stott has played hundreds of gigs in New York City, Boston and all along the east coast. She busked for five summers in Provincetown, MA playing 50-60 two hour sets to thousands of tourists from all over the world each summer, otherwise known as the Provincetown International Commercial Street Tour. Stott self-published EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT ALL OVER AGAIN, a limited edition compilation of poems, thoughts, and sketches. She hosted WORD ON THE STREET, a Provincetown TV series featuring interviews and performances with Provincetown's street performers. She produced and directed a documentary about the cult favorite high concept punk duo Scream Along with Billy entitled NEVER WASHED: SCREAM ALONG WITH BILLY. Most recently, Stott was a presenter at the first annual TEDx Provincetown.

PreS-K--Two families meet at the park nearly every day, and while the moms visit on the bench, the preschoolers play together. Jack has brought several trucks with him to the sandbox and Alex has brought a doll with a sparkly pink tutu and ballet shoes. Neither child makes any judgment about the other's preferred toy; with simple ease they find a way to play with both. At one point they seem to have genuinely reached an impasse, but they eventually reach a compromise and continue to play together until they find something that they can both agree on enthusiastically. The spreads are filled with the scenery around the park, tall autumn trees, and a shadowy city skyline, while on the other pages the watercolor illustrations zoom close to Alex and Jack as they talk and play and send sand flying. Illustrations extend the story from cover to cover with the two families greeting each other on the path to the park on the front flyleaf and waving goodbye on the back. Text is simple and repetitive, perfect for a younger preschool audience who might just be learning to share themselves. Simple and tender, this book delivers a powerful message without being didactic. VERDICT A welcome addition to the collection of picture books that challenge gender stereotypes. A first purchase for one-on-one and small group sharing.--Laken Hottle, Providence Community Library

PreS--A sweet, understated story. In minimal yet well-structured text, a child asks, "Do you love me?" Even, he wonders, if he's not gentle? What about, he asks, if "I jump in puddles wearing my new sneakers?" The protagonist, a boy with a thatch of red hair, pinhole eyes, and an earnest yet worried expression, perfectly captures the universality of this question. Phelan's illustrations bring this quiet text to exuberant life with pastel watercolors as the child and his dog leap, jump, and make mischief throughout the white space on which they exist. The perfectly timed text, with questions one after the other, listing all the possibilities this boy can imagine, ends of course with the perfect answer. "No matter what you do ... I'll always love you." There are other books with this theme, including Jeanne Willis's Mommy Do You Love Me? (Candlewick, 2008) and Debi Gliori's No Matter What (Harcourt, 1999). Both of these titles feature animal characters and have more text. Use this wonderful book in toddler storytimes, but make sure you get extra copies--there will be a big demand.--Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

PreS-K-A little boy goes for a walk with his mother, balancing on a stone wall beside a path, and asks her what she did for him when he was little. She enumerates some of the things--dressing, bathing, and feeding him, reading a bedtime story, etc.--and ends with the observation that now he can do these things on his own. He agrees as he proudly lists what he can do back to her. But then he stops on a thought-"Will you still take care of me when I'm big?" And, as he refuses his mother's help and jumps triumphantly off the wall by himself, she assures him, "Even when you're big, I'll be there." This is a quiet story, illuminated by beautiful pastel watercolors that sketch the special relationship between mother and son. Good as a cozy bedtime story.--Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

Gr 1-3--Ben is sent to his room for feeding his dog his dinner (again!), and he certainly isn't using the time for quiet contemplation. He writes an apology letter because he knows it will help spring him. Ben unearths his stash of hidden snacks, releases his pets for his amusement, and thinks about which battle video games he'd like for his birthday. As he knowingly says, "Time alone in my room is great for this kind of tough decision-making." Eventually, he finds his slingshot and works on his "special-ops skills" by using the heads of his army men to fire at his stuffed animals. The boy revels in time away from the bossy adults in his life and waits for his brother's bad behavior to secure his release. Children will enjoy the boy's creative, matter-of-fact approach to his confinement, but adults will feel a bit queasy when confronted with the boy's thoughts and actions. Gilpin's drawings capture perfectly the child's interests and expressions--not to mention the wildly disordered state of his room. Mischievous boys with hearts of gold are a staple of childhood literature, but calculating boys are a bit harder to root for.--Sally James, South Hillsborough Elementary School, Hillsborough, CA

Want to Play Trucks?
By Ann Stott. Illus. by Bob Graham.
Aug. 2018. 32p. Candlewick, $15.99 (9780763681739). PreS-K.
The eye-catching cover illustration gives readers a good idea of where this is going. Two boys--one white,
one black--are playing with toys. One has a dump truck, the other a ballerina doll. One day, Jack asks if
Alex wants to play trucks. "Let's play dolls," Alex says, adding, "that drive trucks." There is a discussion of
which toy is better, and then come the fateful words: "You can't wear a tutu and drive a crane." Alex
disagrees. An argument ensues, but in a clever twist, it turns out the fight isn't about what adult readers
might assume. Jack explains to Alex that a doll's tutu won't fit into the driver's seat. Alex considers. He
drops the doll's tutu, leaving the doll in purple overalls. Satisfied, both boys continue playing until there's a
new priority: the ice-cream truck. Graham, who's illustrated books on sensitive topics before, is the perfect
choice for this one. His kid-friendly artwork portrays the dynamics of young childhood play in ways both
realistic and fun. In both pictures and words, a smart take.--Ilene Cooper

Jack likes trucks and Alex likes dolls, but they still have fun playing together.
Every morning, the two friends meet in the sandbox at Atwood playground while their caregivers chat
together. However, Jack, who is depicted as white, and Alex, who is depicted as black, like different toys.
When Jack suggests they "play trucks," Alex comes up with a compromise to include both of their favorite
toys in the game. In the end, a shared love for ice cream overcomes the differences in their toy preferences.
Subdued watercolors illustrate an autumn morning at a playground near the city. Graham's (Home in the
Rain, 2017, etc.) attention to detail brings the world around Jack and Alex to life. The two caregivers,
presumably Jack's and Alex's mothers, lean close together in active conversation in the background. Their
posture shifts subtly as the story progresses. Passers-by, including an elderly person in a wheelchair and a
woman wearing hijab, stroll beyond the fence. Stott's (What to Do When You're Sent to Your Room, 2014,
etc.) simple prose focuses on the interaction between Alex and Jack, which leaves room for readers to
interpret who the children are based on the illustrations. Neither child ever receives gendered pronouns.
Overall, the story conveys a positive message about inclusiveness and compromise.
This lighthearted story embraces the freedom of imaginative play. (Picture book. 2-5)

This may be one of those books parents don't want their children to read--of course, the prohibited is all the
more attractive. Ben is no stranger to spending some time alone in his room: He gets sent there. A lot.
Therefore, he has some tips to pass along to readers. First, get the apology out of the way early to avoid
further punishment. Next, raid the hiding places where you've stashed food. (What?! You mean you don't
have any? Drop this right now and go find some!) To while away the time, Ben makes some tough decisions
(regarding his birthday wish list), redecorates his room (tape and magazine cutouts are involved!) and plays
with his pets. Sorting baseball cards, organizing collections and making faces at his big brother are also
great activities. And since Ben shares a room with said brother, he can usually count on his time being
shortened, as his "mom never leaves us alone together in our room." A page turn shows why. Hand-drawn
and digitally colored illustrations bring Ben to life for readers: the gleam in his eye, his mischievous grin,
his imagination, his deadpan manner, the false emotions he puts on to apologize. But by the end, readers
may be wondering whether Ben purposefully gets sent to time out--it seems to be that much fun. Parents:
Beware what happens behind your child's closed door when you pronounce: "Go to your room!" (Picture

Ben, the hero of this funny how-to, has spent so much time in his bedroom that he's wallpapered an entire
corner with photos torn out of a sports magazine. "My entire room should be completed by the summer," he
notes with ... pride? Yes, Ben assures readers, being sent to one's room as punishment can be the epitome of
"me time" for the well-prepared kid: productive ("This is also a good time to sort my baseball cards") and
reflective (when better to decide what video games he wants as birthday gifts?). Ben can even improve his
"special-ops skills" with the help of his expressive pug, who joins him during his temporary banishment.
Gilpin (100 Snowmen), working in an exaggerated cartoon realism reminiscent of Mad magazine, has
created a ne plus ultra of a messy boys' room, and his portrayal of Ben is very much in sync with the cool
confidence and strategic smarts articulated in Stott's (I'll Be There) matter-of-fact first-person narration. It
just confirms what parents have feared all along: going to one's room isn't exactly doing hard time. Ages 4-

This companion book to Always (2008) traverses familiar picture-book territory. A young boy, probably
primary-school age, clambers on a stone wall while his mother follows alongside in the grass. Their
conversation begins, "Did you push me in a carriage when I was a baby?" Mother flashes back to all the
things she did for her son as an infant: pushing him on a swing, feeding him "squished peas" and giving him
"bubble baths in the kitchen sink." She then reminds him that he is older and can now do those things on his
own. The spare but often bland text is rescued by Phelan's deft use of watercolor, which injects sly humor
into the boy's independent actions. From a delightfully mismatched outfit to an exuberant mess of a
breakfast for mom, the red-haired tyke aims to balance his new skills and confidence with assurance that his
mother will always "be there." And he does-bravely jumping from the wall without any help while watchful
mom proudly looks on. The brief text coupled with quiet, warm illustrations is best suited for young
preschoolers but lacks the power of the classic Guess How Much I Love You or Mama, Do You Love Me?

between independence and connection in a gentle, uplifting ode to the parent-child bond. During a walk
with his mother, the boy sprints ahead and climbs onto a low rock wall. As he balances, he asks his mother
about his babyhood, and she responds reassuringly. She fed him and bathed him and dressed him and loved
him. At the book's center, the boy assumes the narrative, telling his mother all of the same things he can
now do on his own, for himself and for her. Images of the walk are interspersed with snapshots of the
scenes that both characters describe, and Phelan's warm, sketchy watercolors in a restrained palette of blues,
greens, and grays with orange accents reinforce the sweet sentiment. While the touching story, with its
simple text and accessible images, is easily suitable for story hour, this will doubtless be a favorite for
sharing at home, as well.--Thom Barthelmess

Stott, Ann ALWAYS Candlewick (Children's) $15.99 Aug. 1, 2008 ISBN: 978-0-7636-3232-8
Stott's simply executed tale explores the expansiveness of a mother's love. A young child queries his mother
on the parameters of her affection through a series of seemingly guileless questions. Stott wryly captures the
gamut of childhood peccadilloes as, with charming timidity, the child quizzes his mother to establish if her
love encompasses whether he eats his peas (or not), uses the potty (or not), etc. Child readers will recognize
their own behaviors and anxieties, and will be reassured by the mother's steadfast testimony of
unconditional affection. Phelan's watercolors adeptly convey the gleeful mischief that is part and parcel of
childhood. His deft sketches are an amusing extension of the tale and well worth second and third glances--
as the child wonders whether his mother will love him if he doesn't eat his peas, readers see just his
scowling eyes at table-level, little green vegetables strewn all over, including his hair. The artwork and the
cozy message combine to create a vastly reassuring if not particularly original tale for little ones. (Picture
