In a recent online interview, Drawn.ca suggested that "to say Bob Staake is just an illustrator is like saying 'The Beatles' were just a bunch of musicians; the title doesn't do the artist justice."

One of the nation's most prolific illustrators, his clients have included The New Yorker, TIME, McDonald's, Vanity Fair, Amtrak, Young & Rubicam, American Express, Sony, United Airlines, Nickelodeon, Sports Illustrated For Kids, Ralston Purina, Hallmark Cards, Kenner Toys, US News and World Report, Fortune, The Washington Post, AT&T, Sega, TWA, Dr.Pepper, The Chicago Tribune, Good Humor, Warner Books, Kellogg's, Cartoon Network, Turner Broadcasting, The Wall Street Journal, AOL/Time Warner, Forbes, Simon and Schuster, The Ren and Stimpy Show, MAD, USA Today, Children's Television Workshop, Blockbuster Video, The Walt Disney Company, Anheuser-Busch, Doubleday, Klutz Press, Hershey's, Target Stores, Miami Herald, Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Fleishman-Hillard, DMBB, and countless others.

    Bob Staake Trivia:

The crinkle-cut french fry was invented by Staake's maternal grandfather.

In 1995 Staake proposed to the Restuarant Association of America that instead of deli sandwiches being named after celebrities, that celebrities be named after deli sandwiches. Unfortunately, this idea never caught on.

Staake is responsible for naming the Abobe imaging program "Photoshop."

An independent thinker challenges the norm in Winter's zany--and relevant--story. Things can get confusing in the city of Bobville, where everyone is named Bob and "everyone looks exactly the same." How do you know who you are if everybody is identical? The answer is, of course, "You're Bob! Just like everybody else!" But things can also get dull, because all the Bobs (comical figures each with uniformly floppy facial features and spindly limbs attached to black-and-gray-striped spherical bodies) get up at the same time, eat the same food, enjoy the same hobbies, go to the same movies, listen to the same music, and read the same books. In fact, everyone in Bobville even thinks the same thoughts ("If one Bob was thinking, I'd rather be fishing, you could bet your life that all the other Bobs were thinking that, too"), and they are highly suspicious of anyone not named Bob. When a freethinking Bob makes the choice to gel his hair, don colorful clothing, and declare himself "Bruce," he is maligned and booted out of Bobville. The departure is marked by a shift in the color palette as the grays and muted pastels are replaced by bright and vibrant hues. Outside the town limits, Bruce is welcomed to the "big, exciting world" and by a quirky and dynamic cast of characters bursting with unexpected colors and geometric shapes. A reminder of the importance of independent thinking and the joy of being different wrapped in a silly yet thought-provoking tale. EMMIE STUART

Welcome to Bobville! it's home only to people only Bob! In Bobville, the Bobs eat the same food, wear the same clothes, watch the same movies, and have the same hobbies. They agree on everything--ESPECIALLY that they don't like anyone who isn't named Bob.

The Bobs go about their Bob ways, until one day, to the surprise of the entire city, one resident decides he wants to do things a little differently, and live as Bruce. In response, the Bobs build a wall to keep Bruce, and anyone else who dares to be different, out of the city. But Bruce doesn't mind--it turns out the diverse world outside of Bobville is actually very beautiful.

In view of today's highly polarized society with respect to politics, cultural issues, race, creed, and gender, "Welcome to Bobville: City of Bobs" is an especially timely and entertaining picture book for children ages 3-7 in which author/storyteller Jonah Winter and artist/illustrator Bob Staake deftly explore how exclusion and walls breed intolerance, and how being different and open-minded enriches our lives and the world. While also readily available in a digital book format (Kindle, $10.99), "Welcome to Bobville: City of Bobs" is a unique and unreservedly recommended addition to family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library social issues themed picture book collections.

Stein, Peter THE RUNAWAY NO-WHEELER Viking (Children's None) $17.99 11, 17 ISBN: 978-0-593-11420-9

Neither snow nor sleet nor missing wheels stay this brave 18-wheeler from its appointed round.

Stein and Staake try their hand at a bit of plot after having created multiple books in the free-wheeling Cars Galore (2011) vein. Tony is a massive semi with plenty of experience delivering goods on time. Alas, today is one day when Tony will find himself tested like never before. First he loses a wheel when he slides on some slime. Then poor roads, baby ducks, and wheel thieves beset the brave truck in turn. After the encounter with wheel-eating aliens, Tony’s lost 14 wheels. The last four are soon to follow, but what’s that? Up ahead lies Tony’s destination. Can he make it after all? Staake applies much of the cheerful chaos already perfected when he illustrated Margaret Wise Brown’s similarly out-of-control The Steam Roller (2017). A cast of rainbow-colored people gapes and gawps as Tony barrels through candy-colored retro landscapes filled with tiny details for sharp little eyes (and a solid Seinfeld reference for older ones). Whether it’s thieves, ET’s, or slime, this book’s rhymes never strain for the right number of syllables, upping the ante on the action beautifully. (This book was reviewed digitally with 9-by-22-inch double-page spreads viewed at 43.9% of actual size.)

A bona fide fiasco on wheels that’ll have the kids screaming for more. (Picture book. 3-6)

The Runaway No-Wheeler

e-book ed. 978-0-593-11421-6 $10.99

Tony, a sturdy eighteen-wheeler with a pronounced underbite, sets out to deliver his truckload of goods: "The road ahead was awful. / Tony bumped and bounced. / 'I f-feel I'll lose another w-wheel!' / The troubled truck announced." On his treacherous route Tony faces nearly every obstacle imaginable--and then some (honestly, who could predict a rocket ship in the middle of the road?). At every turn, a new fiasco dislodges another wheel from its axle until he risks losing them all. Can he make it to the end with only one, or even none ? Carefully planned pageturns and perfectly executed rhymes steer readers into heightened anticipation until Tony arrives at his (surprising) destination. Staake's sharp and bold illustrations highlight Tony's wild ride in primary and secondary colors that explode with every crash, bang, and boom the truck faces on the road. A thrill for truck lovers and young mathematicians alike, this raucous read-aloud will rev up listeners, who will surely be counting on their fingers Tony's rapidly disappearing wheels--and will cheer with delight at the concluding twist.

The Path. By Bob Staake. Illus. by the author. Apr. 2022.32p. Astra/Minedition, $18.99 (9781662650635). PreS-Gr. 2.

Using a path as a metaphor, Staake takes a child on a journey of exploration, suggesting the different possibilities for life choices. The simple text offers a discussion of paths, from easy and reassuring to mysterious and dangerous and, finally, challenging and rewarding. Digital cartoon illustrations, done in brilliantly colored, full-bleed, double-page spreads, take routes through many landscapes. Flat terrain takes us through fields of wildflowers, then turns to mountainsides occasionally blocked by big rocks, and zigzags through murky forests. Tension mounts when the only way forward appears to be through a dark cave, until a joyful child slides downhill out the other side. As for the positive ending? The last page shows the footprints of the child as they wander away from all the possible trails to forge a journey all their own. Excellent for discussion of self-discovery, making choices, and increasing self-confidence, this story is useful for both the classroom and for parents supporting growth opportunities. And there's a chance to recap the journey with a vertical page that displays all the paths represented. --Lolly Gepson

Staake, Bob LOST Anne Schwartz/Random (Children's None) $18.99 10, 1 ISBN: 9780593707029

In this wordless tale, a child searching for a missing cat finds other lost animals along the way.

After failing to find the feline at home, the child takes to the neighborhood, wallpapering every shop and mailbox with "lost" signs. The child encounters the mail carrier, who's also looking for a lost pet, as well as a shopper seeking a missing giraffe. The child manages to find a pup and a couple of other animals but what about the cat? Readers can breathe easy: This tale has a happy ending. Staake uses color strategically to highlight what readers should be noticing. All the backgrounds are rendered in shades of gray set against a very pale blue sky. The people with lost pets and the pets themselves are the only elements depicted in color--an artistic choice that turns readers into pet finders and advances the plot in the absence of text. The people themselves are fancifully colored; the protagonist has reddish-pink skin. Their expressive faces and body language effectively signal depth of feeling. All these expert touches make for an accessible work of storytelling art.

A satisfying tale conveyed solely--and adroitly--through images.(Picture book. 4-6)

Many people can relate to the worry that strikes when a pet goes missing. Staake (Bluebird, rev. 3/13) brings empathy, camaraderie, and humor to a familiar experience in this wordless picture book. As a child searches for a missing cat, they discover that other people are missing pets all over town: some common animals and others.. .not so much. As they go about their pursuit, a series of chain reactions results in surprising twists, newfound friends, and eventually lots of happy reunions. Staake's illustrations invite readers to join the search party. His creatively varied and detail-packed panel sequences keep the plot moving forward, but readers won't want to flip through the pages too quickly. Each spread holds clues as to how the pets and owners will eventually reunite. The judicious use of bold colors over black-and-white backgrounds allows viewers to follow each character through sometimes-crowded scenes, emphasizing their actions and range of emotions (from fear to determination to relief) throughout the entire tale. The entertaining payoff reflects the power that can come from neighbours--and even their pets--banding together to assist one another. LINDSAY BAYER
