SIDELIGHTS
Growing up on a farm near London, Ontario, Canada, Judy Ann Sadler loved to read, write, and do crafts. She is the author of more than twenty craft books for children, teaching them everything from paper crafts and needle crafts to knitting, sewing, and embroidery. For example, in her book Knitting, Sadler presents eleven knitting projects, from a pom-pom scarf to slipper socks. The craft books feature full-color photos and simple instructions for children to follow. Sadler herself is a quilter and is cofounder with author Barbara Haworth-Attard of a quilt pattern company called Babs ‘n’ Jas Designs. She also speaks at libraries about crafts and has helped teach thousands of children how to craft. She also demonstrates craft projects on television.
Sadler is also the author of picture books, and more than a million copies of her books have been sold around the world. According to a Kirkus Reviews contributor, the “appeal” of Sadler’s picture book Nothing Happens in This Book “lies in the fact that the title tells a lie.” Illustrated by Vigg, the book begins by present blank shadowing pages that eventually turn into brighter pages. Still, someone from the dark exclaims: “This book looks boring doesn’t it?” The speaker lights a lantern revealing that he is a pointy nosed, little man wearing a bow tie. Barbara Spiri, writing in School Library Journal, noted that the narrator, who speaks directly to readers, entices the children “to follow him on the journey,” adding: “He makes them feel like they can help to solve the mystery of the missing story.”
At one point, the narrator peaks around the page and begins to find a series of items that appear to be lost, such as a striped ball, a red nose, a clown shoe, and a trumpet. At this point the book’s narrator recognizes that children may think the book is so boring that they will want to quit reading and exclaims: “Come on! Let’s keep going! Maybe something will happen in this book!” As the pages turn, all the items are matched up with circus performers in a parade. The final spread shows a circus parade showered by confetti and the concluding statement “Everything happens in this book!”
“Sadler keeps the pace at a quick march, building smoothly from quiet stillness to riotous fortissimo,” wrote a Publishers Weekly contributor. John Peters, writing in Booklist, noted that the idea that wondering about whether or not anything happens “will draw readers into this brief metafictive mystery.”

Sadler, Judy Ann THE DIGGER DANCE Owlkids Books (Children's None) $18.95 10, 18 ISBN: 978-1-77147-453-5
Let's explore the graceful side of construction.
The protagonist of this book is captivated by the construction equipment in a field across the street from Grandma's suburban home. Grandma informs the child that the diggers dance, but the young narrator isn't so sure about that. Do diggers dance? Sadly, it will be a while before that question is answered. When the book opens, it's too late to see any action, and rainy weather stops construction the next morning. Thankfully, Grandma is prepared, and she's all set to bake cookies. The protagonist helps--with a little imaginative play along the way that relates to construction. While the cookies are baking, the sky clears, and the child sets out for the construction site, where the diggers are "dancing" as they complete the project efficiently. The story provides an interesting look at the graceful movements needed for effective construction and demolition, and the watercolor and pencil illustrations help to capture that beauty. The typography attempts to keep up, with words bending and bowing around the page; opinions will differ on whether it succeeds, but overall the story will appeal to construction fans. Savvy storytellers will use some of the action words--dip, swing, pound, and dump--to introduce and reinforce vocabulary building. The protagonist is light-skinned with dark hair, while Grandma is light-skinned with gray hair. (This book was reviewed digitally.)
A well-constructed view of construction. (Picture book. 3-6)

Synopsis: A boy and his grandmother are waiting for... something. While they wait, they sit and knit, they stretch, they rock, they dance, they snack, and they talk. But still, time passes slowly.
As the hours go by, they fill the day together. They sit and knit and wait. Until it's finally time! The long wait is over when the boy's parents come home with a special arrival. We see what the boy and his grandma have been creating together: a handmade gift for the newest member of their family, created with love.
Critique: With its soft color palette and simple full complementing a lyrical text with its rhythmic beat, "While We Wait" by the team of author/storyteller Judy Ann Sadler and artist/illustrator Elodie Duhameau is an original and utterly charming picture book showcasing the value of patience and that some things are well worth the wait! "While We Wait" is an especially and unreservedly recommended addition to family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library picture book collections for children ages 3-7.
Editorial Note #1: Currently residing in London, Ontario, Canada, Judy Ann Sadler is the author of over twenty-five books for kids, including a series of craft books. Her books have been translated into many languages and have sold over a million copies around the world.
