Perret, Delphine PEDRO AND GEORGE Atheneum (Children's Picture Books) $17.99 6, 2 ISBN: 978-1-4814-2925-2

Cousins Pedro and George, a crocodile and an alligator, try to correct the record on their differences in this French import. Pedro is methodical. George is emotional. He's fed up with being called a crocodile. Pedro suggests a trip to the city to correct the foolish children who perpetuate the confusion. They pack a bag, including a comb ("of no use, of course"), and so begins a bizarre tale of discovery, all depicted in detail-packed black-and-white line drawings. The only spots of color highlight the featured creatures: green for reptiles, beige for humans. Along the way, the cousins decide that eating the children will teach them a lesson, and they try to implement their plan in Mrs. Muiche's classroom. George bites little Josephine's foot, but "pif paf bam," she puts him in a judo hold for a teachable moment. Star pupil Theodore explains that George is an alligator; the crocodile is identified by his fourth lower tooth. Although readers will take a moment to study the cartoons for the differentiation, they mostly (unlike the dutiful students) will be giggling uncontrollably. The droll storytelling and absurd action roll along to the conclusion: the reptiles go home and receive thank-you letters from Josephine for teaching them the difference between a crocodile and an...well, perhaps that is another story! A wholly original romp told with deliciously Gallic flair in an uncredited translation. (Picture book. 5-8)

Delphine Perret THE BIG BAD WOLF GOES ON VACATION Sterling (Children's Picture Books) $12.95 3, 5 ISBN: 978-1-4027-8633-4

Bernard, the Big Bad Wolf who lives in Louis' closet, is back (The Big Bad Wolf and Me, 2006). Huzzah! Bernard is pretty much under control, and he's even vegetarian (except for fish), so why shouldn't he go on vacation with Louis and his grandpa? It's not as easy as one might imagine. Grandpa takes to the talking wolf quite easily, although Bernard hates pretending he's a dog. He can't help choose sandwiches, for example, since Louis is afraid the wolf will forget to walk on four legs and not to talk. "I am wounded by your lack of trust" says Bernard haughtily. They even argue over who will be first in the water (it turns out to be grandpa). Twelve chapters are done in comic-book style, with multiple squiggly sketches that seem artless but are vividly funny. Human figures are blue, the elongated and angular wolf is brown and solid (everyone else is linear), and the occasional crab or cow is done in rust or maroon. The language remains simple, accessible, charming and quite funny in this nifty follow-up. Readers may find metaphors about imaginary friends, taming one's fears or having special fun with grandparents, but mostly, they will go from giggles to guffaws with this disarming trio. (Graphic novel. 5-10)

K-Gr 2--Pedro is a crocodile and his cousin George is an alligator. Or is it the other way around? This book, a French import, is not pedantic, but rather a humorous adventure. Tired of being called the wrong names, they blame the formless entity called "the children on the other end of the world" and forge a journey to rectify the situation and settle the score. Naturally, this will bring a stream of objections from an audience of young readers! Pedro and George's string of off-the-cuff comments provide a backdrop of humor as they traverse the jungle and arrive at school. The visit renders young whippersnapper Josephine, a judo master, and Mrs. Muiche useless-her hair standing on end is depicted in memorable straight, parallel, energetic but understated lines. The drawings are fresh and economic in tone and line, packed with myriad little details for children to scour and devour and created devoid of computer enhancement, with just a black felt tip pen and only two tones of colored ink: pinkish flesh-tone and a brightish pea green. Juxtapositions such as "Dictation" written on the blackboard side-by-side with a sign saying "Do not Copy" will have the grown-ups laughing, too. The class decides to make the visit educational and to take advantage of the live specimens to investigate the anatomical differences between the two reptiles. Pedro, George, and all the kids, especially Josephine, become fast friends. VERDICT A fun school stop that budding readers will enjoy perusing and reading again and again.--Sara Lissa Paulson, The American Sign Language and English Lower School, New York City

PERRET, Delphine. The Big Bad Wolf and Me. illus. by author, unpaged. CIP. Sterling. 2006. Tr $9.95. ISBN 1-4027-3725-4. LC 2005031460.

Gr 2-4--Beginning with the endpaper that shows a boy outlined in blue ink roaring at a frightened wolf that is hiding next to a bed, readers are caught up in the wry humor of both text and illustrations. The child explains, "Usually, when I get home from school, nothing exciting happens." Then, "the Big Bad Wolf" arrives at his house and moans, "Nobody believes in me anymore. I don't scare anyone." Sympathetically, the boy sets about helping his new friend regain his confidence. Each of 12 chapters has one enticing sentence that appears by itself on tire first page (e.g., "I always wondered what he did when I was at school"), followed by small evocative line drawings. In one scene, tire wolf growls at himself in a mirror, tries to scare a child walking by a window, and records his progress in slash marks on a wall in the closet where he resides. Spare use of yellow, red, and green serves to emphasize a few dramatic moments: one drawing shows the little boy with a yellow face, lit up by a flashlight, when he tries to demonstrate one way to be scary. These whimsical illustrations show up clearly on the warm cream-colored paper. This charming book sings with humor that younger children will likely appreciate; older readers may also smile.--Kirsten Cutler, Sonoma County Library, CA

PreS-Gr 4--This follow-up to Perret's The Big Bad Wolf and Me (Sterling, 2006) again stars Louis and his wolf friend, Bernard. Similar in style and format to the first volume, the story is told through snappy dialogue and expressive pencil line drawings. With Louis's last school assignment completed and summer break beginning, Grandpa invites the child on a trip to the ocean. When Louis asks to bring along Bernard, Grandpa consents. During their travels, the three enjoy lunch in a park when they can't take Bernard into a restaurant, come upon a herd of odiferous cows blocking the roadway, and stop to stretch their legs near woods. Arriving at the seaside, Louis and Bernard partake of plenty of interactive seaside fun. The humorous characters are memorable, and the translation is smooth. Perret uses different font sizes and bold print to indicate which character is speaking. Comical sketches of Grandpa and Louis are drawn in blue while drawings of Bernard are in black. The artwork has been colored digitally for the English-language edition. Told through 12 short chapters, the story can be read and enjoyed independently from the first book. Readers will be left wanting more Louis and Bernard adventures.--Lynn Vanca, Freelance Librarian, Akron, OH

Perret, Delphine A BEAR NAMED BJORN Gecko Press (Children's Fiction) $17.99 3, 3 ISBN: 978-1-776572-69-4

A thoughtful bear has tranquil forest adventures.

In a faraway wood, Bjorn, a bear with a kidney-bean-shaped head who often stands on two legs, lives "in a cave. / The walls are very smooth. / The floor is pretty comfortable." Over six episodic chapters, Bjorn has a variety of whimsical escapades, including winning a sofa that does not quite fit his cave's aesthetic, borrowing clothes from a human campsite (and returning them, of course, with a thank-you note) for a carnival with his animal friends, and preparing himself for his annual hibernation. Bjorn and his compadres encounter problems both animal and human, such as trying to select just the right forest object to mail to a human pen pal or visiting self-appointed forest physician Owl for an annual exam. French author Perret's tale is serene, moving along languidly like the calming flow of a brook through the woods. Bits of text reside alongside simply wrought thin, black-line illustrations on cool mint-green pages in this graphic-novel hybrid. While the story itself makes for a pleasant read-aloud, the small-scale, unassuming art may better serve independent readers than groups. Children drawn to quieter animal fare imbued with warm humor and accompanied by a gentle nudge toward nature should find kinship here.

A meditative tale with a homespun feel, best for thoughtful readers. (Graphic/fantasy hybrid. 6-10)
