    Peggy J. Parks holds a bachelor of science degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she graduated magna cum laude. She is an author who has written more than 100 nonfiction educational books for children and young adults on a diverse variety of topics ranging from environmental science, the Internet, and space research to controversial issues such as gay rights, animal experimentation, stem cells, and drug legalization. Two of her titles were recognized as "Best Books" of the year by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition, she wrote and self-published her own cookbook entitled "Welcome Home: Recipes, Memories, and Traditions from the Heart."

The discussion is jargon free, honest about traumas agonizing toll, and includes info on therapy and medications. Up to date, accurate, and clearly written, Brain Tumors focuses on the pathology of how tumors form, as well as the symptoms and treatment. Very clear about how little is known about causes, this title raises an important teen issue: can heavy cell-phone use increase brain tumors? Personality Disorders is not as accessible, with some heavy jargon, but it is up-to-date enough to include information on dialectic behavior therapy. Schizophrenia does an excellent job of demystifying the disorder, including the multiple-personality diagnosis, and discusses whether particular treatments can help. In her brief survey of online addiction, Parks addresses four basic questions: Is online addiction real? Can people get addicted to social networking? How serious of a problem is compulsive online gaming and gambling? Can people recover from online addiction? Obviously, the first question drives the rest, and in this entry in the Cybersafety series Parks acknowledges that there is a body of opinion that such addiction is not real, although there is an expanding body of professional opinion that argues that online addiction in its various forms is a viable consideration for evaluation and treatment. Parks addresses each of her four questions in separate sections of her book, which begins with a narrative overview, followed by primary source quotations, facts, statistics, and illustrations. A chronology, source notes, and a bibliography conclude. The format is visually pleasing and highly accessible, and the text, though necessarily brief, is cogent and well written. A useful introduction to a highly dynamic field.

In a tweet heard 'round the world, #MeToo sparked a movement, igniting a fiery, complex conversation about sexual harassment.

Parks (Careers in Fashion, 2019, etc.) provides a robust history of sexual harassment, beginning with the #MeToo social media movement. Initiated by activist Tarana Burke in 2006 and pushed into the mainstream lexicon by actor Alyssa Milano in 2017, #MeToo demonstrates solidarity among people who have experienced sexual harassment. Parks begins with the hashtag, then details allegations against the rich and famous, like Harvey Weinstein, and elected officials such as Al Franken. She also relates the stories of those who have spoken up, including Taylor Swift and journalist Gretchen Carlson. Parks pushes the narrative beyond a tale of victim and victimized to one of victors: She correlates the #MeToo movement with the historic rise in women elected to state and federal offices in 2018, asserting that the #MeToo movement played a significant role. #MeToo sparked a wave of legislative interest and workplace policies to address sexual harassment, but not without unintended consequences. Parks explains some of the serious externalities that resulted: a presumption of guilt against the accused, diminished opportunities for women to be mentored by male colleagues, and retaliation against accusers. Men and boys are also mentioned as targets of sexual harassment. Ample color photographs add interest, and sidebars offer important contextual information.
