SIDELIGHTS

An award-winning illustrator based in Massachusetts, Jennifer E. Morris has contributed artwork to Linda Whalen’s Little Red Rolls Away and Licia Morelli’s The Lemonade Hurricane: A Story of Mindfulness and Meditation, among other tales. Morris has also illustrated several original stories, among them Please Write Back! and The Ice Cream Shop.

Morris offers a gentle lesson about manners in her first self-illustrated picture book, May I Please Have a Cookie?, wherein readers meet an impatient young alligator that loves the goodies his mom bakes. In a companion volume, Please Write Back!, Alfie the alligator corresponds with his grandmother via handwritten letters. Regarding the first tale, Booklist critic Hazel Rochman applauded Morris’s “combination of very simple sentences and bright, clear, colorful illustrations.”

Published under the name J.E. Morris, Morris’s “Steve and Wessley” beginning readers also combine her original stories and colorful art. In The Sea Monster, Steve the opossum and rabbit pal Wessley investigate a mysterious object floating in a pond, and The Ice Cream Shop chronicles Steve’s efforts to enjoy a scoop of his favorite treat. The “easy-to-read text” in The Sea Monster earned praise from School Library Journal reviewer Gloria Koster, the critic noting that Morris’s cartoon-like illustrations are “sweet, engaging, and full of humor.”

In Morelli’s The Lemonade Hurricane, an energetic youngster learns to meditate with the help of an older sister, and Morris’s illustrations here “capture calm and chaos equally well,” as Katrina Hedeen remarked in the Horn Book Guide. In the pages of Juliet Clare Bell’s Don’t Panic, Annika! an anxious child learns to manage her fears during a stressful episode, and her experience comes to life in “bright and cheerful [illustrations] with a slightly retro feel,” according to School Librarian critic Lucinda Jacob. A red barn is uprooted and transported across town to become the centerpiece of a new amusement park in Little Red Rolls Away, a story by Linda Whalen. Here Morris’s “vibrantly colored cartoony illustrations depict an anthropomorphic Red, whose expressions … lend gentle humor” to the story, according to a Kirkus Reviews contributor.

“Growing up in the small town of Bradford, Pennsylvania, I loved to draw,” Morris once told SATA. “As an only child, I spent many hours entertaining myself drawing and looking through picture books. I was not a prolific reader as a child, but I would spend hours pouring over the illustrations. And from the time I was about six years old I wanted to become an artist.

“In college computer science seemed like the more practical major, but I took every art class I could, including a summer studying at the Chautauqua Institute. Even after college, when I went to work as a computer software developer, I made time for art and I never lost my love of picture books. When my daughter was born, I took the opportunity to leave my computer career and pursue my artistic passions more seriously.

“At first, I created my artwork using traditional media (watercolors, acrylics, and colored pencil). But my background in computers and technology made the jump to digital media a logical progression. The computer gives me a freedom to experiment with color and composition that I never experienced with paint and paper. Although my work always starts with pencil drawings, I now use the computer to create my final paintings.

“My children, Robin and Leo, are the biggest inspiration for my work. The main character in my picture book May I Please Have a Cookie?, the cookie-loving alligator named Alfie, shares their love of sweets and their flair for the dramatic. I also see a lot of myself in Alfie’s exasperated mother.

“To me, creating characters and stories that children can relate to and enjoy is nothing short of magical. And when a child says they enjoy my stories or even that they wish they could meet one of my characters, I feel that I’ve really accomplished something important.”

    FAQ
    Do you do school visits?
Currently, due to COVID, I am not doing in-person visits. But email me if you would like to discuss a virtual visit.

    GET IN TOUCH
    Where do you live?
I live in lovely rural Massachusetts. My closest neighbors are a family of beavers who live in a pond behind my house.

What medium to do you use for your art?
All of the illustrations that you see on my website were done digitally. When I feel like stepping away from the computer and using real paints I use watercolors and gouache (pronounced “gwash’‘), which is sort of like a cross between watercolor and poster paint.

    Do you have any pets?
I have two cats. One of them is named Flubby. I wrote some stories about him.

    Will you illustrate my story?
I wish there was enough time to illustrate everyone's story but I'm afraid my schedule is pretty busy. I can no longer accept self-published projects.

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to create children's books?
Do your homework. Creating children's books is very fun and rewarding but it's also a very competitive industry. The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) has a lot of resources to help get you started. If you are interested in self-publishing, Harold Underdown has a lot of great resources on his website.

MORRIS, J. E. Fish Are Not Afraid of Doctors. illus. by J. E. Morris. 32p. Penguin Workshop. Apr. 2018. Tr $8.99. ISBN 9781524784430.

Gr 1-3--Maud, a young koala, goes to the doctor for a check-up in this appealing new reader series. While in the waiting room, Maud admires the fish in a large tank and when it's her time to go to the exam room, she tries hiding behind the tank in order not to be seen. In the doctor's office, Maud is declared healthy, but needs a vaccination. After asking "what's a vax-i-nay-shun?" she again wishes she was a fish so that she could avoid the shot. She begins to daydream that she has fins and scales and is under the sea meeting turtles, octopuses, and whales and blowing lots of bubbles. She's called out of her reverie and finds that the vaccination has already happened and her visit is over. When her mom calls her brave, Maud quickly responds that it's because "fish are not afraid of doctors." The story uses a variety of methods to tell the story--comic panels, dialogue, word bubbles, and some wordless images--and there's an engaging plot that readers will relate to. There are perhaps a few new vocabulary words but context clues in the illustrations and the doctor's explanation make them understandable. The printmaking-style illustrations are softly colored and textured (note the turtle wallpaper) and have a cartoon like style that will likely appeal. VERDICT Young readers will connect with Maud and will look forward to her next outing. A solid purchase for libraries-Mary Kuehner, Arapahoe Library District, CO

Morris, J.E. FISH ARE NOT AFRAID OF DOCTORS Penguin Workshop (Children's Fiction) $8.99 4, 24 ISBN: 978-1-5247-8443-0

Checkups can make anyone anxious; Maud the koala models how to use visualization to alleviate normal fears at the doctor's office.

Like many doctors' waiting rooms, this one is furnished with an aquarium. First Maud just hides behind it. When that doesn't get her out of her checkup, she pretends she is a fish, swimming in the sea, to distract herself from her shot. No surprise, she doesn't even feel the needle. Maud and her mother are cartoonish koalas. Dr. Susan is another animal, perhaps an opossum, while the female receptionist is a bunny. Narrative text across the top of comic-strip panels describes the waiting room and the actual medical exam. Maud's fantasy breaks out to occupy full-bleed, double-page spreads. A "Note to Caregivers" on the final page explains a bit more about visualization techniques and claims "Studies have shown that children who have been distracted by blowing bubbles during injections have reported less pain." Beginning readers have probably already had most of their vaccinations, but the reminder of these coping techniques could prove useful. Maud seems to be an extremely anxious koala. In Much Too Much Birthday (published simultaneously), Maud uses similar strategies to cope when she feels overwhelmed. The stories are purposive, their bibliotherapeutic missions clear, but Maud is an appealing character.

Useful in physicians' offices and early-childhood classrooms and for children whose nerves might be a bit jangly. (Early reader. 4-8)

Pearson, Anthony EDUARDO GUADARDO, ELITE SHEEP Two Lions (Children's Fiction) $17.99 10, 1 ISBN: 978-1-5039-0290-9

Eduardo is not just any sheep--he's going to be an Elite Sheep, and he can't wait to graduate from the Fairy-Tale Bureau of Investigations.

When he reports to the home office, he's excited to learn he's been assigned his own case--and humble he's not. The other agents' offers of assistance are spurned with righteous indignation. "Would someone who needs a partner already get put on a case? Before they even graduate?" Three "perpetrators," i.e. "bad guys," are trying to kidnap Mary for a zillion-dollar ransom, and it's Eduardo's job to keep her safe--only it's not as easy as it sounds. Bashed, crashed, and smashed, Eduardo finally yelps for help and realizes that being a team player is what being Elite is all about. Pearson's tough-guy asides come fast and furious and will be responsible for many an eye-roll whiplash. "This here's what you call a dossier (pronounced DAH-see-ay for all you civilians)." Morris' too-cool-for-school secret-agent squirrels, complete with sunglasses, clipboards, and earpieces, document Eduardo's every blunder from the endpapers to the team sports competitions. Pun-filled scenarios that alternate between the Men in Black-like headquarters and nursery-rhyme citizenry reminiscent of Shrek's cast provide many visual distractions when the story slows or gets too corny. In true comic-strip fashion, the dialogue is confined to speech bubbles, and cracks about Mary's little lamb abound. Eduardo's comeuppance is as subtle as a sledgehammer, as is the author's call for teamwork.

A little too cute for its own good. (Picture book. 4-7)

Morris, J.E. FLUBBY IS NOT A GOOD PET! Penguin Workshop (Children's Fiction) $9.99 4, 23 ISBN: 978-1-524-78776-9

Meet Flubby, a quintessential cat.

Flubby, a rotund gray-and white cat with stubby legs, seems unimpressed by his owner's expectations of pet behavior. He won't sing like Kim's bird, catch like Sam's dog, or jump like Jill's frog. Flubby doesn't even run when it rains. But when thunder pounds--"KA-BOOM"--cat and kid need each other. Morris limits her palette to muted shades of brown, blue, gray, and green with an occasional spot of orange. Short, declarative sentences follow a predictable pattern and complement the spare illustrations. Cartoon panels opposite full-page pictures move the simple story along. In one memorable double-page spread, the action--of the child throwing a ball while Flubby watches and then rolls over to sleep--moves readers' eyes left to right across the spread in three stacked, horizontal panels. A full range of emotions, including happiness, frustration, boredom, concern, disappointment, fear, is conveyed with subtle changes in posture and eyes. The human characters are a multiracial mix. Kim presents Asian; Sam appears black; Jill seems white. Flubby's owner is not gendered and has longish brown hair and brown skin. Series companion Flubby Will NOT Play with That! publishes simultaneously.

Nonjudgmental encouragement for new readers--even if they flub up. (Early reader. 5-8)

Morris, J.E. DUCKS RUN AMOK! Penguin Workshop (Children's None) $9.99 3, 2 ISBN: 978-0-593-22291-1

A flock of flying ducks descends for a splash-filled break—to the complete surprise and dismay of a turtle peacefully swimming alone in the pond.

A fast-paced rhyming text describes the scene in omniscient narration, which is supplemented by speech bubbles to relate the afflicted turtle’s reactions. “A flock of ducks / flies in a row. / They look and see / a pond below.” As they alight, the startled turtle asks, “Who are you guys?” As the ducks grow more and more rowdy in their aquatic antics, the incensed turtle exclaims, “Hey! Cut it out!” Another two groups of ducks arrive, the first set the members of the rock-’n’-roll band the Screaming Ducks and the next the crew of a food truck amusingly called Freddy Drake’s Pies and Cakes. Now “all kinds of ducks / are on the scene. / Old ducks, young ducks, / even green.” All the ducks are of the white, domestic variety; the green refers to the vexed turtle, who protests several times, “I am not a duck.” Cartoon drawings with thick, black outlines add details to the zaniness, which eventually evolves into a pie-throwing spectacle that completely frustrates the poor turtle and forces everyone to “DUCK!” A thorough cleanup ensues under the turtle’s watchful eyes before, much to his relief, everyone leaves…but then a Camp Muckaduck school bus pulls up and disgorges a (multiracial) slew of human children. (This book was reviewed digitally with 9-by-13-inch double-page spreads viewed at 75% of actual size.)

Seasoned beginning readers will enjoy the silliness and empathize with the turtle’s wildly invasive predicament. (Early reader. 6-8)

Morris, J.E. FLUBBY WILL NOT GO TO SLEEP Penguin Workshop (Children's None) $9.99 9, 21 ISBN: 978-0-593-38284-4

Flubby is back—but not to sleep.

What child hasn’t resisted sleep at one time or another? So it will make sense to readers that when Flubby gets a new bed, the fussy feline doesn’t want to sleep in it. Using the repetitive pattern of successful books for beginning readers, Flubby’s child-owner tries to solve Flubby’s insomnia problem four different ways, offering a new pillow, a warm blanket, a lullaby, and a bedtime snack—all to no avail. In typical cat fashion, the contrary cat finds his way back onto the child’s bed with a “Meow.” A few deft pen strokes convey both cat’s and child’s emotions and the child’s increasing frustration. Morris uses two spreads for each episode, with one page divided into two panels. At last Flubby solves the problem on his own, claiming the child’s stuffed animal to cuddle with in the dark. A culminating repetition of all the things “Flubby did not need” provides vocabulary review and leads to the satisfying conclusion: “Flubby just needed a friend.” The muted palette of grayish-brown, blue, green, and orange is well-suited for the bedtime setting. The text’s simple declarative sentences and repeated phrases use fewer than 50 words, almost guaranteeing success for new readers. Flubby’s child-owner is not gendered and has wavy brown hair and skin. (This book was reviewed digitally.)

No flubs for this cat and kid. Just satisfying bedtime reading. (Early reader. 4-8)

Morris, J.E. FLUBBY DOES NOT LIKE SNOW Penguin Workshop (Children's None) $9.99 10, 10 ISBN: 9780593523391

A pampered, plump pussycat resists frosty fun.

Once again, the adorable but recalcitrant Flubby asserts his individuality. His devoted brown-skinned young owner struggles to please him despite his obstinacy. Like most felines, Flubby finds winter trying. When it snows "a little," then "a lot," the child wants to play in the wet white stuff, but Flubby finds it too cold--first, for his feet, then for his back and head. Each time, he retreats to the warm house. The child resourcefully produces tiny kitty boots, a coat, a hat, and a scarf. Finally, properly enveloped, Flubby is not too cold, does not go back inside, and plays in the snow while his owner creatively constructs a snow-cat. Compared to the earlier books in the series, which use characteristic cat behavior to set up the surprise ending, this one finishes anticlimactically, not to say unrealistically. (A cat docilely allowing himself to be repeatedly dressed up is rare indeed, and the cat's back half is still bare and presumably cold.) But the words are simple and repetitive, and the pictures are engaging. Flubby's perfectly round golden eyes and ballooning belly will evoke smiles, and when Flubby is depicted sitting with rear legs splayed and a dubious expression on his face, readers might laugh despite the predictable text.

If expectations are modest, this latest addition to the series is mildly amusing. (Easy reader. 5-7)

K-Gr 2-Kami, a young girl with brown skin, cannot wait to go outside in the snow and play with Flubby, her cat. Flubby is not so sure about the snow. Kami and Flubby head outside, and while Kami is ready for fun, the cat goes back inside. Kami then helps Flubby get ready for a snowy day by giving him boots, which keeps his feet warm. But then Flubby's back is cold. This continues for a few pages: the cat keeps getting cold until he is dressed appropriately for the big snow day. Then, Flubby does not want to go back inside--he wants to play! Kami and Flubby build snow kittens and enjoy the weather. They finish the day back inside with some hot cocoa by the fireplace. Simple structure of a sentence or so on each page is great for emerging readers. The illustrations are charming, with their cartoon outlines, facial expressions, and layout. A previous book in the "Flubby" series, Flubby Is Not a Good Pet!, was a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book. VERDICT A great addition for all libraries looking for modern emergent reader books.--Katie Llera

Morris, J.E. FLUBBY DOES NOT LIKE VALENTINE'S DAY Penguin Workshop (Children's None) $9.99 12, 26 ISBN: 9780593523421

Having survived snow and sleep, Flubby faces his most dire opponent yet: heart-shaped holidays.

Right from the start, Flubby's owner, a brown-haired child with brown skin, declares that since today is Valentine's Day, they intend to show Flubby some love. Flubby, a stubby-legged white cat with gray markings, reacts as any cat would--which is to say, he couldn't care less. Cards, fruit baskets, and flowers all prove insufficient gifts for an insufficiently interested cat--he can't read, he doesn't like to eat fruit, and the flowers make him sneeze. Fortunately, where gifts fail, good old-fashioned hugs are always a welcome choice. Any cat-owning kid reading this story may instantly recognize Flubby's very catlike instincts to curl up in an empty heart-shaped box or try to sit in the fruit basket. Humor is conveyed in Flubby's complete lack of facial expressions, more than anything else. The simple text, ideal for new readers, shines through, illuminating the heart within the story. As holiday titles go, this one sticks to the rudimentary basics of what it truly means to love your pet. Child readers may also find that they identify sometimes with the child owner, and sometimes with the preternaturally self-possessed Flubby.

A holiday title worthy of even the most reticent feline companion. (Early reader. 5-8)
