Kirkus Reviews Apr. 18, 2024, review of Buckingham, Dorothea N.: FORGOTTEN OATH. p. NA.
Dorothea N. Buckingham (better known to all as Dee) has called Hawaii home for over 30 years. Following her career as a librarian in the Hawaii State Library System and the University of Hawaii for some years, she was able to leave and pursue writing full-time. Her published titles include: “The Essential Guide to Sumo a complete guide to the Japanese sport” (Bess Press, Inc., 1994) which was very popular during the height of the American sumo wrestlers. “My Name is Loa”, (Sydney Press, third printing 2022), her first young adult novel, is still a consistent backlist book and was on the Kamehameha Schools’ reading list for over ten years. “Who Murdered Jane Stanford?: An Answer Imagined", (Sydney Press, 2022) is a historical novel about the mysterious death of Jane Leland Stanford in Hawaii in 1905. Dee has a deep fondness for both the young adult and historical fiction genres and has received numerous regional and national reviews for her young adult works. In fact, Staring Down The Dragon, (Sydney Press, 2003) was an American Library Association's “Best Book for Young Adults". Writing the story of Rell DeMello, a high school sophomore returning to school after nearly a year of cancer treatment, was a daunting challenge. However, she felt strongly that it could offer a meaningful portrayal of a teen dealing with a realistic crisis. “Delicious Tidbits – The Recipes and Stories of Sackets Harbor” (Sydney Press, 2007) is a historical, pictorial cookbook developed around the unique characters, organizations, events, and anecdotes surrounding the beautiful village of Sackets Harbor, New York. Ms. Buckingham has returned to Hawaii in the last few years and is available to current and aspiring authors as an Author Accelerator certified book coach. She is a talented speaker, has appeared on west coast radio and television in Hawaii, and has presented book talks and workshops to all levels. To arrange to have Ms. Buckingham address your group, either personally or by teleconference, please contact: buckaloha@gmail.com, or you can reach her at dorotheabuckingham@gmail.com

Buckingham's middle-grade time-travel mystery novel toggles between past and present Hawaii.
Tween Noah Kekoa Silva and his cousin, Blaise, are on a field trip to the Mission Houses Cemetery in Oahu, Hawaii, cleaning headstones and learning to respect the dead, when Noah hears a voice inside his head saying, "Help him!" The headstone he's cleaning honors Lopaka Aiona, who disappeared at age 14. Noah is briefly spooked but tries to shake it off. He notices a pouch on the ground next to the headstone; he tentatively picks it up, puts it around his neck, and is transported to a fishing village in 1834, his wrists tied with rope, alongside Lopaka Aiona. ("I bent down, picked it up, and put the string around my neck. As soon as I did, I was somewhere else.") Even stranger, Lopaka seems to recognize Noah--he believes that Noah has promised to save him from execution with the titular forgotten oath. So begins the quest to solve the mysterious death of Doctor Douglas, whose body was found in an open pit, a crime for which Lopaka was blamed. Noah travels back to the present to gather archival evidence of the crime, but when he returns to 1834, Lopaka does not recognize him, has no memory of their prior interaction, and Doctor Douglas is still alive. Buckingham manages to pack a lot into her short book, and the pace is relentless, with cliffhangers at the end of each chapter. She also cleverly integrates the time travel conceit and weaves native Hawaiian cultural elements throughout. These elements (and a brief glossary of Hawaiian words and phrases) are further explored in an informative author's note. While the occasional grisly scenes might be intense for younger readers, they will suit (and perhaps even thrill) the target audience. This blend of thrilling narrative and thoughtful cultural representation makes for a consistently engaging and edifying read.
A quick, clever, and fun exploration of Hawaiian history and folklore.
