Peyton Corinne has a story that many would-be writers dream of. She was working as a teacher at the beginning of the pandemic when she lost her job. She had been working on a romance novel and decided to take advantage of the extra time to finish it, and then she self-published it on Amazon. Within days, an agent read it, fell in love with it, and then sold it to a traditional publisher. Social media publicity followed, and the book, Unsteady, was a hit.

Corinne’s follow-up, Unloved, has the same setting—a college hockey team— and some overlap with her debut, but features different protagonists. In this installment in the “Undone” series, the potential lovebirds are hockey star Freddy and Ro, a tutor who has been assigned to help Freddy keep his grades up so he can graduate. The two actually had romantic encounters in their freshman year, but neither remembers those situations the same way. Now, as tutoring sessions lead to late-night phone calls, the two have to decide whether to take the next step.

Andrea Reid, writing in Nerd Daily, recommended Unloved to fans of other sports romances such as The Dare and Stealing Home. She pointed out, however, that the book is an “emotionally complex read” rather than a typical “light-hearted rom-com,” due to heavier themes such as bullying, grieving, and trauma. Still, she appreciated the “slow burn romance” that features “a lot of will they/won’t they” scenes. Reid also praised the “ton of swoonworthy moments.” A writer in Kirkus Reviews also enjoyed it, calling it “deeply moving and emotional.” The result is an “angsty and deeply affecting read.”

    Hi! i'm peyton.
I write romances with imperfect characters, angst and lots of heart. My stories come with a healthy dose of swoon and angst, of hurt and comfort, and—though it make take them some time, they always end with a happily ever after.

I’ve been writing since I was a kid in my head, but I’m finally letting those stories live further than my notes app.

If I’m not writing, I’m making another cup of coffee, rewatching Twilight and probably frantically reading through my own endless TBR.

I love to laugh, but my books might make you cry.

Exclusive Interview: Peyton Corinne On Her Upcoming Second Book Release
    February 4, 20254 minute read

We caught up with author Peyton Corinne Ahead of the release of her highly anticipated second novel, Unloved. In November of 2023, the Huntsville native self published her first book Unsteady on Amazon. After a few days of Unsteady being self published, Peyton received an email from an agent who saw her work and fell in love. In the coming weeks, Peyton’s world was flipped upside down as her book was sold at auction to be independently published and began to go viral on social media. From there, everything was a whirlwind and took off like she never expected.

In 2020, Peyton began writing her first book Unsteady while she was working as a teacher in Florida. After switching from in-person teaching to online during the pandemic, the company she worked for went under. At that time, Peyton was then given the opportunity to chose her next steps. “I was like, all right, I have two options. I’ve been working on this book so I can either wait just two more months and live off of my savings or go find another job.” After deciding to take time off and finish the book, she said it was the best decision she could have possibly made.

The book went viral on social media, capturing the hearts of people across the globe. With social media being a huge source of information for many people current day, Peyton says that she feels honored to see people talk about her work. “It was very surreal at first and I was just really excited that people were even reading it, let alone talking about it. And now, I’m so thrilled every time I see it because I know the power that everyday readers have on the Internet.”

Peyton grew up loving theater and reading, but kept her early writings carefully hidden on the Internet away from everyone. “I always say that I was living a double life because I was going to school, doing theater and having fun with friends, and then I was going home and writing under a pseudonym online doing Twilight and Harry Potter fan fictions. I was like a prolific fanfic author at age 14”, she laughs. As a longtime fan of romance novels, she says that it will always be at the core of her interests.

After graduating from Auburn University, Peyton relocated to Florida to pursue a Disney internship. Fast forward to present day, she calls Jacksonville, FL home but is anxiously waiting to plant roots elsewhere in the future. Though the location is still undetermined, she admires Huntsville and how it helped inspire her at a younger age. “You know, there is a privilege to growing up in Huntsville versus anywhere else in Alabama.”

Peyton attended school in Huntsville, Alabama and spent most of her formative years in the Rocket City. When asked about how that influences her writing, she had nothing but positive things to say about the place that helped shape her. “Being in Huntsville is like living in an environment where everything is so smart and there’s a next level of education, but there’s also such an appreciate for the arts. Growing up in Huntsville there was always a bit more tolerance for creativity and art history and such.” Seeing others make a living through creative ventures made that path feel more realistic to Peyton than the idea of possibly living in a rural area of Alabama.

Her second novel Unloved is set to release on February 4, 2025 with Atria Publishing Group. The story follows hopeless romantic Ro and hockey player Freddy as they form an unexpected bond, discovering self-worth and the healing power of love. Peyton says that she definitely felt more pressure writing the second book and it felt very much like “pulling my own teeth” to finish. While advanced copies have started to make their rounds ahead of publishing, readers are absolutely loving the newest addition to her catalogue and the characters.

What does the future hold for Peyton? While her true love will always be romance novels, she would love to delve into fantasy as well as writing a series. “Before I wrote Unsteady, I wrote like 3 fully fantasy novels… like three different beginnings of different series. They’re just sitting on my computer and now I’m just waiting because I just couldn’t get to that point where I feel like they’re done and ready to go.” Needless to say, this might be the first, but certainly won’t be the last time you see Peyton’s name.

Snail On The Wall bookstore will be hosting an event with the author on Thursday, February 6, 2025 to celebrate Unloved. The event will be a time for readers to get their hands on the new book and even grab a signature from Peyton Corinne herself. While the books are both standalone pieces, we highly recommend reading both novels as they’re beautiful written. Peyton brings incredible characters to life that reader can connect with and hopefully see themselves in.

Corinne, Peyton UNLOVED Atria (Fiction None) $18.99 2, 4 ISBN: 9781668068489

A hockey player falls in love with his tutor.

Matt "Freddy" Fredderic is the life of the party at Waterfell University. He's a starter on the hockey team and can have any girl on campus--but he's also in danger of failing out if he can't improve his grades in math and biology. His ADHD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia make him eligible for university tutoring services, and Ro Shariff is his newly assigned tutor. Ro had a crush on Freddy freshman year but convinced herself that she's over it now, in her senior year. She's been in an on-again, off-again relationship with a guy named Tyler for the past two years, but he's manipulative, borderline abusive, and probably cheating on her. Ro is desperate for love and affection and still suffers from bouts of intense homesickness. She and Freddy develop a tentative friendship even though they couldn't be more different on the surface--he's a popular, gregarious athlete to her quiet, introverted academic. Ro sees beyond Freddy's persona as a dumb jock, while he recognizes that she feels lonely and like an outsider. When Freddy swoops in to rescue Ro after an ugly disagreement with Tyler, the two admit that their feelings for each other are more romantic than friendly. Corinne's second novel is an emotional powerhouse. Ro and Freddy share everything with each other: fears of not being good enough for their friends, details of their harmful previous romantic relationships, and the deep feelings of grief related to illness and loss of parents. They have to learn to trust themselves and each other in the midst of the pressures that come with transitioning from college to adulthood. Their evolution from friends to lovers is a classic slow burn, and it makes for an angsty and deeply affecting read.

Deeply moving and emotional.

Freddy is a playboy hockey player who, in addition to dealing with past trauma and grief, is struggling to pass his biology class, not just because of his inappropriate past with the professor, but because of his dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. When Ro’s on-again, off-again boyfriend and fellow biology tutor bullies Ro into taking on his “nuisance” of a student, Freddy, she is initially hesitant because Freddy is her “celebrity” crush and her first kiss (although Freddy doesn’t remember this). But study sessions soon lead to a meaningful friendship and an escape from the loneliness that Freddy and Ro both feel. As Freddy and Ro help each other deal with past trauma, grief, and abuse, real feelings start to emerge.

Unloved is a new adult hockey romance featuring the athlete with tutor, forced proximity, and reformed playboy tropes. It deals with themes and topics such as mental health, dyslexia and dyscalculia, ADHD, bullying and harassment, abuse, death and grief, cheating, manipulation, fame and reputation, sexuality, love and heartbreak, self worth, challenging parent-child relationships, struggles of females in male-dominated fields, loneliness and isolation, abuse of power, PTSD, and dealing with past trauma. I would recommend Unloved to fans of sports romances like The Dare by Elle Kennedy, Stealing Home by Grace Reilly, Hail Mary by Kandi Steiner, Play with Me by Becka Mack, or A Photo Finish by Elsie Silver.

Firstly, I want to point out that Unloved isn’t a light-hearted rom-com. It’s more of an emotional romance that deals with some complex (and potentially triggering) topics; this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just something to note, especially if you’re a mood reader like me. Furthermore, I felt like the cutesy cover art and even the blurb didn’t really prepare me for such an emotionally complex read. Since the book was a little longer and more emotional than I was expecting, I personally feel like I might have preferred listening to an audiobook version of Unloved (or tandem reading an audio and physical copy of the book). It’s important to note that Unloved takes place at the same time as Unsteady (Rhys and Sadie’s story and book 1 in the Undone series) and a lot of the plot in these two books were interconnected, so I think that readers need to have read Unsteady before picking up a copy of Unloved. Even though I have read Unsteady about a year ago, I felt as though i was missing or forgetting some important plotlines from Sadie and Rhys’ story, which unfortunately created some minor gaps in Unloved. Thus, I’m thinking that a tandem reading guide for the two books could be beneficial for some readers.

Even though I had a hard time getting into this book and it wasn’t really what I was expecting, I ended up really liking it in the end. Unloved is definitely a slow burn romance with a lot of will they/ won’t they vibes, and the majority of the spice takes place at the end of the book. That being said, there was a ton of swoonworthy moments (including a sentimental sewing project, a romantic trip to the bookstore, and a cute hang out involving temporary tattoos) and secret mutual pining throughout the book, which I loved! Ro’s aesthetic with her butterfly clips and bows was fun and I loved how bookish Ro was, as I always relate well to characters who are fellow bookworms. Lastly, the fact that there was no dreaded third act break-up or miscommunication trope (which is my least favourite trope) was appreciated.

If you’re in the mood for an emotionally complex read full of swoon-worthy moments and mutual pining, then I highly recommend picking up a copy of Unloved!

Unloved is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of February 4th 2025.
