SIDELIGHTS
Christine Feehan began writing as a girl. The first true love scene she wrote was confiscated by her teacher in math class. She went on to become a successful romance writer, beginning with the publication of Dark Prince, the first novel in her “Dark/Carpathian” romance series. Feehan has written several other popular and award-winning series, all mixing romance with adventure and the paranormal. “I’ve been a writer all of my life—it is who I am,” noted Feehan on her author Web site. “I write for myself and always have. The ability to create pictures and emotions with words is such a miracle to me. I read everything; I mean everything! All kinds of books, even encyclopedias. I am fascinated by the written word and I love storytellers. It is a great privilege to be counted one myself.”
Each book in the “Dark/Carpathian” series focuses on immortal Carpathian vampire hunters who are also vampire-like but only kill vampires and evil individuals they encounter. At the center of the novels are the protagonists’ search for love, which is necessary if they are to be able to keep feeling emotions. In an interview with Claire E. White for WritersWrite.com, Feehan explained how the series evolved: “We had suffered a terrible loss in our family and I found it had robbed me of my ability to write, which was like breathing to me. I created the Carpathian world out of that darkness. I wanted them to go on no matter how bleak their existence, to hold on until the light came for them. I loved vampire stories and myths and asked myself why would someone choose to give up his soul. A life without love was the only answer I could come up with that made sense as nothing else is that important.”
In the second book in the series, Dark Desire, physician Shea O’Halleran is called to the Carpathian mountains through her dreams of a Carpathian named Jacques. She soon learns she is the target of vampire hunters who believe she is one of the undead because of a strange blood disease she has that makes her sensitive to light and requires daily blood transfusions. When she finds Jacques, he has been buried alive, a stake plunged into his heart by an evil vampire. O’Halleran helps Jacques, and the two eventually fall in love. Writing on AllReaders.com, a reviewer commented: “How Shea eventually discovers who—and what—she really is and what love is make for a deeply satisfying love story.”
In Dark Gold, heroine Alexandria Houton is a computer programmer who follows a voice that calls to her, only to find her little brother in the hands of a vampire. The vampire chains Alexandria inside a cave and begins the process of transforming her into one of the undead when Aidan Savage, a Carpathian who is in San Francisco hunting vampires, comes to rescue her. Houton’s fate is now sealed; she becomes an undead Carpathian. Nevertheless, she insists that she will lead a normal life, testing Savage’s patience as he waits for her to accept her fate and his love. An AllReaders.com contributor felt the character of Savage is “such a strong personality” that other characters “seemed to pale in comparison,” and went on to call the book “a great addition to the Dark series.”
Dark Guardian, the eighth book in the series, pairs female cop Jaxon Montgomery with Lucian Daratrazanoff, another immortal Carpathian who hunts vampires. The two meet when Daratrazanoff rescues Montgomery after she has been shot while investigating a case at a warehouse. Montgomery has led a life of self-imposed loneliness because anyone who gets close to her is in danger of being murdered by her stepfather, Tyler Drake. Daratrazanoff, one of the oldest and most powerful Carpathian vampire hunters, has maintained his will to live by believing there is someone out there to love. Montgomery is determined to protect the Carpathian from her evil stepfather. The two fall in love, and Daratrazanoff begins the process of turning Montgomery into a Carpathian and his mate for life. A Publishers Weekly contributor found it hard to believe the tough and independent female cop would so willingly submit to becoming a Carpathian, but added: “Nevertheless, Feehan’s newest is a skillful blend of supernatural thrills and romance that is sure to entice readers who can stomach the occasional gory scene.”
Dark Symphony tells the story of Byron Justicano, a Carpathian vampire hunter who falls for concert pianist Antonietta Scarletti. Scarletti is blind and has psychic powers. The Carpathian soon learns that Scarletti is the object of a murder plot associated with someone who is pilfering the Scarletti family fortune, and he is determined to save the woman he considers his life mate, even if it means his own death. Harriet Klausner, writing for AllReaders.com, commented: “Some amusing scenes lighten the taut intrigue; together they blend into a supreme symphony.” A Publishers Weekly contributor noted that new readers “may be daunted by the complexity of the Carpathian world,” but predicted that they will ultimately “be roped in by this unconventional and intriguing installment.”
Feehan’s vampire romance series has continued to garner favorable reviews, with a Publishers Weekly contributor noting that Dark Melody “may be her most emotionally engaging installment to date.” In Dark Destiny, Feehan introduces her first female Carpathian vampire hunter. A Publishers Weekly contributor found “inconsistencies” but noted “the story has sufficient sensuality to keep readers sated.”
Dark Secret finds Colby Jansen raising her two younger siblings, Ginny and Paul, on the family ranch after the death of their cherished stepfather, Armando Chevez. Bad luck constantly befalls the Jansens and their ranch, until members of the Chevez family and the De La Cruz brothers, members of a powerful local family, arrive to take custody of Ginny and Paul and then dispose of the ranch. Colby finds herself attracted to the fierce but handsome Rafael De La Cruz, and soon the pair have joined forces to combat an ancient, tremendously powerful vampire. As a torrid romance erupts between the two, Colby begins to display the beginnings of telekinetic and telepathic powers. According to Library Journal contributor Kristin Ramsdell, Dark Secret is characterized by “lush prose, stunning sensuality, and an emotional intensity that nearly sends the pages up in flames.” Diana Tixier Herald predicted in Booklist that fans who appreciate the “horror aspects of the Dark series will revel in the scary demons and toothy serpents.”
Dark Demon brings together Carpathian Vikirnof Von Shrieder, who is on the verge of becoming a vampire for lack of a soul mate, and Natalya Shonski, a vampire hunter who feels obligated to help Vikirnof recover from wounds received while fighting at her side. She initially rejects him because of her hatred of Carpathians, but soon the couple realizes that they are indeed soul mates. They must cooperate in an attempt to foil a plan to destroy all the remaining Carpathians.
Dark Celebration: A Carpathian Reunion brings the diverse and widely scattered Carpathian family members together for the Christmas season, even as the race of vampire hunters contemplates its gradual extinction due to low birth rates and high infant mortality. A Publishers Weekly reviewer called the novel a “sex-and magic-filled treat, which makes a good entry point for newcomers.”
Dark Possession returns to a South American setting as Manolito De La Cruz works to win his soul mate, MaryAnn Delaney, a counselor for abused women who has come to Manolito’s family estate in Brazil to help a rape victim. MaryAnn is initially wary of De La Cruz, but their relationship soon solidifies. In the background, jaguar men lurk in the jungle around the De La Cruz compound, and MaryAnn is astonished when she discovers that she herself might be a werewolf. Another Publishers Weekly contributor concluded that “Feehan’s combo platter of danger, fantasy, and wild, uninhibited romance continues to sizzle.”
Nicolas De La Cruz is at the center of the nineteenth book in the series, Dark Curse. Here the controlling Nicolas has decided to end his seemingly eternal existence. However, a meeting with the independent minded Lara Calladine, of the Dragonseeker and human bloodlines, sends him on a much different course. Writing on the RT Book Reviews Web site, Jill M. Smith noted of this book that “Feehan’s contributions to the paranormal romance genre are incalculable!”
Vampire slayer Ivory Malinov takes center stage in Dark Slayer. Ivory lives alone in the woods, but one day her world is changed when she comes across a wounded man, Razvan, whom she knows is her soul mate. Razvan, too, feels the attraction, but the problem is his body is taken over periodically by the evil mage Xavier. “Loyal followers of the long-running series will definitely enjoy this steamy pivotal entry,” wrote Booklist contributor Kristine Huntley. A Publishers Weekly reviewer also had praise for this twentieth series installment, dubbing it a “lengthy but powerful tale.”
In Dark Peril, the Dragonseeker Dominic intends to end his life by destroying all the vampires of South America. But when he discovers that the woman literally of his dreams, the Jaguar woman warrior Solange Sangria, actually exists, he has second thoughts about ending it all, as does Solange. Smith, writing again on RT Book Reviews Web site, declared that this series addition is “action-packed and filled with intriguing twists and turns.”
Zacarias De La Cruz also feels his long time of existence is due to end in Dark Predator. His brothers have found mates, and they have vanquished a vampire army. He decides to let the rays of the sun end his existence but has not bargained on a young and willful woman stumbling upon him and refusing to let him die. But that is just what happens; no matter how much he protests, the young woman will not abandon him. And then Zacarias sees that he has a final mission: to protect this obstinate female. Harriet Klausner, writing on the Genre Go Round Reviews Web site, noted of this addition: “Fascinating, but slow, fans still will appreciate the depths of a male dragged from the abyss by lower food chain species.”
Dark Lycan is the twenty-fourth series addition, and it features Dragonseeker Tatijana, who is awakened in human form, and Fenris Dalk, who returns to the Carpathians wounded from battle. Seeking freedom from those who guard and protect her, Tatijana escapes and eventually meets Fenris, who is a Carpathian-Lycan hybrid. The pair fall in love but face danger in their journey to becoming lifemates. “No matter how hard I tried, … I just couldn’t get into this book,” commented a reviewer in the online Smart Bitches Trashy Books. Dark Wolf picks up where the previous novel ended, focusing on human Skyler Daratrazanoff and Carpathian Dimitri Tirunul. A Fiction Vixen Web site contributor praised this series addition, observing: “Dimitri and Skyler did not disappoint me and I am thrilled. Props to Ms. Feehan for making this couple live up to their promise and giving her readers exactly what they have been waiting for.”
Dark Blood “goes over the top with magic, battles, passion, and a multitude of characters,” according to a Publishers Weekly reviewer. Here warrior Zev and Dragonseeker Branislava become unlikely lifemates.
Andre Boroi has almost given up finding his lifemate in Dark Ghost, and then he meets human geologist and empath/healer Teagan Joanes. A Harlequin Junkie Web site writer offered a positive assessment of this installment: “The mixture of a dark & sexy Carpathian (just look at that book cover!) with a smart & sassy human completely worked for me. Watching them go from the edge of darkness to the heights of true love? That made this paranormal simply a joy to read.”
In Dark Promises, former humans Gary and Gabrielle have both become Carpathians but are unable to become lifemates. However, one of the ancients, Aleksei, and ultimately Gabrielle battle and lust together. A Long and Short Reviews Web site contributor noted of this series addition: “ Dark Promises does have a satisfying happy ever after and tells a good romance story. Many fans will enjoy it and for those that just love the sexy side of a Carpathian romance, those readers are probably going to be extremely happy.”
Charlotte Vintage and Tariq Asenguard are united in a battle against the enemies of both humans and Carpathians in Dark Carousel. A Reading Cafe website writer found this novel a “welcome return to [Feehan’s] earlier writing style and story line presentation.” However, an All about Romance website reviewer was less impressed, commenting: “Feehan provides her usual dose of blood-soaked, lust-filled, melodramatic entertainment. You might like it more than I did. But for this reader, two hundred pages of same-old-same-old with one hundred pages of near-death by cursed splinteritis just don’t cut it.”
(open new)In Dark Illusion, a mage named Julija Brennan and a Carpathian warrior named Isai Florea have a chance meeting in the Sierra Mountains. They discover that they are both intending to destroy a dangerous spell book, so they decide to work together. Julija struggles with self-confidence, but Isai supports her on their mission. The two fall into a romantic relationship. In an interview with Julie Naughton, contributor to Publishers Weekly, Feehan discussed her decision to feature strong female characters in this volume and in the series as a whole. She explained: “I want people to have hope. I want them to see that it’s their strength that can carry them through.” Referring to Feehan, a Publishers Weekly critic suggested: “Her many fans will devour this masterfully wrought tale.”(close new—more below)
Shadow Game, the first in the “GhostWalkers” series, focuses on a government effort to turn a group of psychics into a useful military weapon. When some of the group, known as GhostWalkers, begin to die, the psychic Lily Whitney, daughter of the doctor in charge of the group, sets about to disband them. After her father’s death she falls in love with Captain Rylan Miller, one of the GhostWalkers. Kristin Ramsdell reported in Library Journal that while the romance does not have “the fantasy feel of her Carpathian romances,” it “is equally intense, sensual, and mesmerizing.”
Mind Game continues the story of the GhostWalkers and was called “an electrifying read, one that should satisfy her fans and cement her reputation as the reigning queen of the paranormal romance” by a Publishers Weekly contributor.
Night Game, the third “GhostWalker” novel, finds Raoul “Gator” Fontenot back in Louisiana and desperately searching for Flame, the survivor of evil genetic modification experiments conducted by Dr. Whitney. Flame, who possesses paranormal sonic talents, does not know that Whitney intentionally built cancer into her new genetic makeup. Gator has to find her and convince her that he is one of the good guys before her affliction takes over. Meanwhile, the duo joins forces to search for a missing singer who is a friend of Gator’s family. Herald, in a Booklist assessment, observed that Feehan’s talent at creating “believable characters thrown together in wild, action-packed circumstances makes for a satisfyingly sexy romance.”
Briony Jenkins, the protagonist of Conspiracy Game, was once thought to be autistic but is actually one of Dr. Whitney’s genetically enhanced humans. She has augmented physical and psychic talents and is a powerful empath. Briony consequently finds it painful to be around crowds, but she maintains her position as a circus performer in a trapeze act with the four brothers from her adoptive family. Seeking solitude after a performance in Africa, Briony meets GhostWalker Jack Norton. He has just escaped from an enemy camp, where he was viciously tortured. She helps heal his wounds, even as he uses his own paranormal abilities to give her temporary respite from the sensory overload that result from her empathic nature. They part ways, but the machinations of Dr. Whitney bring them together again. Herald felt that this “fourth entry in Feehan’s satisfying action adventure romance series may be the best one yet.”
Ken Norton, Jack’s twin brother, is the main character of Deadly Game. He is on a mission to prevent the assassination of an American senator married to one of Dr. Whitney’s enhanced humans. When Ken meets Marl, Briony Jenkins’s twin, the two feel an incredibly powerful attraction for each other. But this attraction is an artificial emotion installed by Whitney, along with their enhanced abilities, for the seeming purpose of breeding two of his experimental superhumans.
Predatory Game focuses on two GhostWalkers—Saber Wynter, on the run from Dr. Whitney’s lab, and Jess Calhoun, an ex-Navy Seal injured in a special ops mission—who hide their true natures so well that they even fool each other for a time. But deception can be dangerous, and each begins to wonder if the other might not be a mortal enemy. “Feehan’s at the top of her game with this explosive, scintillating novel,” noted Smith on the RT Book Reviews Web site.
In Murder Game, a psychic tracker of serial killers, Tansy Meadow, is employed by GhostWalker Kadan Montague, who wants to know if another GhostWalker has become a killer. Smith praised the “brisk pacing” of this “high-stakes venture” on the RT Book Reviews Web site.
Mack McKinley goes on the search for a missing member of his street kids GhostWalker team. Jaimie, a favorite, left to discover the secrets of the GhostWalker chain of command; now she is in mortal danger and only Mack and his team can save her. Smith again had praise for the author’s work on her RT Book Reviews Web site assessment, noting that “consistent excellence is a Feehan hallmark, making her novels guaranteed winners.”
Ruthless Game features two GhostWalkers attempting to protect their unborn child from the clutches of Dr. Whitney. Rose Patterson, during her time in Whitney’s lab, was forced to reproduce with Kane Cannon, another GhostWalker. Pregnant, Rose fled the lab, fearful for her child. Cannon, who has the ability to see behind walls, is on a special hostage operation and finds Rose. Now they must evade Whitney, who desperately wants the baby. “Per usual, the supporting cast of characters enriches the story and provide clues to future adventures,” wrote Smith on the RT Book Reviews Web site. Romance Readers Connection Web site reviewer Gloria Gehres similarly felt that Ruthless Game “is one book you don’t want to miss.” The tenth series installment, Samurai Game, features Azami Yoshiie and GhostWalker Sam Johnson in a “suspenseful psychic romance,” according to a Publishers Weekly reviewer.
GhostWalker Wyatt Fontenot has given up on women in Viper Game until Pepper comes into his life. “The constant lustiness starts out as erotic but soon grows ho-hum,” according to a Publishers Weekly contributor. Power Game, the thirteenth installment in Feehan’s “GhostWalker” series, is set in the Louisiana swamps. Here, Bellisia, a woman trained to be an assassin, is sent on a mission that ultimately finds her saving GhostWalker soldiers, including Zeke. Romance ensues in this paranormal that is “packed with heart-pounding action and toe-curling heat,” according to a Publishers Weekly reviewer.
Feehan is also the author of the “Drake Sisters” series, a paranormal romance series that begins with Magic in the Wind . In the sequel, The Twilight before Christmas, the author elaborates on the story of the seven Drake sisters, who have paranormal powers and are much beloved by their local townspeople. The sisters become upset when they sense an impending danger as Christmas approaches; soon they must deal with an evil that threatens the town. Kristin Ramsdell, writing in Library Journal, commented: “Chilling, suspenseful, passionate, and rewarding, this is not your average holiday romance.”
The “Drake Sisters” novels continue with Oceans of Fire. Abigail Drake, while studying her beloved dolphins, witnesses a shooting of two men on a small boat offshore. With the help of the dolphins and her sisters, Abigail rescues the surviving victim, a local man. When she gets him to shore, she unexpectedly encounters Alexandr Volstov, an Interpol agent and former lover who broke her heart years before. Soon, she and Alexandr are considering a romance with each other again. As the story behind the shooting leads to dangerous times, Volstov becomes determined not to lose Abigail again. In a review of Oceans of Fire, Booklist reviewer Herald called the series a “complex blend of fantasy and suspense with a substantial backstory.” The narrative is “brimming with exhilarating action sequences and sultry love scenes,” according to a Publishers Weekly critic.
Libby Drake, the protagonist of Dangerous Tides, is a physician and healer who enjoys the most chaste and demure reputation of all the seven Drake sisters. When one of her teenage patients falls from a cliff, a rescue operation is quickly mounted. However, Ty Derrick, a biochemist and one of the rescuers, sustains grave injuries when his harness fails and he, too, suffers a fall. Libby, long infatuated with Derrick but convinced that he would never be interested in a woman like her, marshals all her formidable magical and medical powers to save him from what would otherwise have been a fatal plunge. Derrick reveals that he has nurtured a crush on Libby for some time, and the pair soon indulge in a romantic relationship. It becomes alarmingly clear, however, that someone is intent on causing the couple harm. Derrick’s fall may not have been an accident due to faulty equipment, and Libby thinks an alleged mobster is out to kill her. Her reputation is threatened, too, after someone takes steamy clandestine photos of Libby and Derrick and sells them to a tabloid newspaper. Herald, in another Booklist review, believed that the novel “offers a tempting blend of paranormal romance and mystery.”
In the fifth “Drake Sisters” novel, Safe Harbor, sister Hannah is attending a fashion show in New York when she is attacked by a knife-wielding slasher who targets supermodels. Local sheriff and handsome eligible bachelor Jonas Harrington witnesses the crime on television, and he vows to find her attacker and bring the perpetrator to justice. Meanwhile, the remaining sisters rush to Hannah’s aid, saving her with their combined magical powers. As the story progresses, Harrington finds that his unreciprocated love for Hannah is causing unforeseen complications for his investigation. The story contains all the elements that Feehan’s many fans “have come to expect: action, gunplay, danger, bad guys, good guys, gorgeous women, and magic,” observed a Publishers Weekly reviewer.
Joley Drake, the musical member of the sisters, is the focus of Turbulent Sea. Joley and her band are on tour, and things get strange when stalkers follow them. Then a young girl from a party after one of Joley’s performances disappears and a roadie is murdered. Joley’s Russian bodyguard, Ilya, is there to protect them, but what Joley does not know is that the man will use his paranormal skills to protect her at the cost of her soul. Smith, writing again on the RT Book Reviews Web site, felt that “Feehan’s gift for compelling characterization is spot on and makes the relationship between this combustible duo aces.”
The “Drake Sisters” series concludes with the 2009 novel, Hidden Currents. Here sister Elle, an undercover agent, is taken prisoner by the psychic villain Stavros Gratsos in a blown operation. Raped and tortured, she is finally rescued by Deputy Sheriff Jackson Deveau, her telepathic link. Elle is devastated by the experience, but Jackson wants to be in her life. He gets more than he bargained for, however, when Gratsos makes a second attempt on Elle and her sisters. Smith found this a “blowout finale” on the RT Book Reviews Web site.
Feehan began a spinoff series from the “Drake Sisters” series in her 2010 work, Water Bound, the first in the “Sisters of the Heart” series. In the first installment, Lev Prakenskii is saved from drowning in the ocean by the mysterious Rikki Sitmore, a diver for sea urchins. Rikki takes the injured man to the home she shares with her five sisters of the heart, and soon she learns that the man she has saved is as haunted by the past as she is. Smith dubbed this an “action-packed and romantic tale” on the RT Book Reviews Web site.
Another sister of the heart, Judith Henderson, a beautiful artist, is at the center of Spirit Bound. She has long waited for a man who can unlock the passion within, and she may soon get what she wishes for in abundance in the persona of undercover agent Stefan Prakenskii, who is coming to her coastal town in search of a criminal once connected to Judith.
The “Sisters of the Heart” series continues with Air Bound, in which Airiana is a genius who sees equations in the air and has taken refuge at Sea Haven. Her father sends mercenary Max Prakenskii to bring her back to him, but soon Max and Airiana are caught up in intrigue and love. “The paranormal talents of Max and Airiana are unique,” noted a Publishers Weekly writer.
Lissa Piner is leading a double life in Fire Bound, avenging her murdered family. Russian assassin Casimir Prakenskii also has his own scores to settle but has promised family friends to keep an eye on Lissa, who very much does not want his protection. A Kirkus Reviews critic noted that this “searing romance … explores the emotional toll of violence and the healing power of love.” Another Prakenskii, Viktor, features in Bound Together. He comes back to Sea Haven to claim the woman he loves, Blythe Daniels, who still remembers how he abandoned her. “In the end, Feehan somehow brings everything to a satisfactory conclusion,” observed a Kirkus Reviews contributor.
Feehan began yet another series with her 2002 novella, The Awakening: The Novella That Introduced the Leopard People, which introduces readers to sensual half-human, half-leopard creatures that roam the rainforests. The first deals with a beautiful naturalist who goes wild among jungle creatures. In the second novel in the “Leopard People” series, Wild Rain, Rachel seeks refuge in the jungle, having escaped an assassin. Rio lives in the forest and has powers and a wild side that makes Rachel wonder if she has found a sanctuary or not.
The third book in the series, Burning Wild, finds a leopard shapeshifter, Jake Bannaconni, protecting his son and a pregnant young woman from the evil machinations of his family. Smith, writing on the RT Book Reviews Web site, felt this novel is typified by “danger and excitement punctuated by sparkling passion.”
The fourth book in the series, Wild Fire, focuses on Connor Vega, a special ops leopard shifter. He is called into duty in the Panamanian rain forest by the Isabeau, a woman he knows that he is intended for, but who thinks Connor has betrayed her. Now is his chance to prove himself, in this novel with “plenty of high-stakes action and gut-wrenching emotion,” according to RT Book Reviews Web site contributor Smith.
The fifth series installment, Savage Nature, is a “tale of blood and family feuds,” as Smith noted on the RT Book Reviews website. Set in the Louisiana bayou, the novel features leopard shifter Drake Donovan dispatched to the bayou to investigate dead bodies all found with a leopard bite. The woman who discovered the bodies, Saria Boudreaux, knows a leopard bite when she sees one, for her brothers are leopard shifters like Drake, who immediately feels the danger in the bayou and also a strong attraction to Saria, who he is sure must be his mate. Smith further thought that the “sizzling relationship between protagonists … gives this one its spark.”
(open new)A later volume in the series, Leopard’s Wrath, is set near San Antonio, TX. At a crime lord’s compound, Mitya, a leopard shifter, is secretly trying to undermine his boss’s dealings in order to minimize violence. He has a chance meeting with Ania, a fellow leopard shifter, and the two fall for one another. “Fans will be pleased with the scorching love scenes and satisfying conclusion,” commented a writer in Publishers Weekly.(close new—more below)
Feehan also writes nonseries romances, including Lair of the Lion, which is based on the classic fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast.” This gothic retelling focuses on the romance between noblewoman Isabella Vernaducci and Don Nicolai DeMarco, the latter suffering under a family curse that causes all of men to be perceived as “beasts.” A Publishers Weekly contributor commented: “Though the relationship … is overwrought at times … they’re a perfectly matched pair … and their steamy sex scenes heat up the pages.” The reviewer went on to call the author’s take on the classic story “inspired.”
Feehan opens a new paranormal series with her 2016 novel Shadow Rider, a tale of Stefano Ferraro, who has the power to ride shadows and thus move about unseen. He and the rest of his family use such powers in the pursuit of justice. One day he sees lovely Francesca Cappello on the street and knows she has the same powers. He is immediately attracted to her but fears that his crime-fighting family might be too much for her. Francesca, an orphan, has always wanted a close family, but she wonders if Stefano’s protective nature can work for her. A Publishers Weekly reviewer was not impressed, terming this a “poorly rendered contemporary paranormal series opener.” A more mixed assessment came from a Kirkus Reviews critic who dubbed Shadow Rider an “intriguing twist on paranormal powers.” Christie Ridgway, writing in BookPage, praised the book, commenting: “Gritty action and scorching love scenes make this series launch a winner.”
(open new)Continuing the series, Shadow Warrior focuses on another member of the Ferraro family, renowned playboy Vittorio. Vittorio clashes with a serial killer named Haydon, who has been terrorizing his foster sister, Grace Murphy, for years. Grace discovers that she is a shadow rider, like Vittorio, and she finds herself strongly attracted to him. Though she tries to resist, she ultimately falls for Vittorio. Reviewing the volume in Booklist, Diana Tixier Herald asserted: “Feehan entrances and pushes boundaries.”
Launched in 2018, Feehan’s “Torpedo Ink” series focuses on a motorcycle club of the same name, who use the skills they learned in a brutal Russian school system to bring vigilante justice to dangerous criminals. Betrayal Road, the series’s 2024 installment, finds members of the club helping Azelie Vargas, a romance author who has been trapped in a commitment to continue working for a possible human trafficker named Alan Billows. Torpedo Ink member Andrii “Maestro” Federoff approaches Azelie to join their investigation into Billows, and the two begin a steamy affair on the side. A Kirkus Reviews critic noted: “[This] long-running series continues its exploration of the way love can help people survive and thrive through trauma.”
In 2021, Feehan launched the “Sunrise Lake” series of murder mystery novels. The first book in the series was Murder at Sunrise Lake, which stars Stella Harrison, owner of a resort in a remote mountain town. Stella has a premonition that a serial killer is in her area, and she bands together with handyman Sam to find the killer before he strikes. In an interview with Dayna Linton, contributor to the Novels Alive website, Feehan explained how the writing process for this book differed from that of her other novels. She stated: “Ordinarily, when I write I have no idea where the hero and heroine are going to take me. I may have a general idea of what I think the book is about and sometimes I’m even right! But I’ve always been more of a ‘pantser’ and written one page at a time on an adventure with my characters with everything revealing itself as we go.” She continued: “With Murder at Sunrise Lake, though, it’s a murder mystery. I knew who did it before I even started. So, I did have to do some plotting with this book and that was very different for me. Most of the story was still organic, but I did have to have some strategy for the mystery in place along the way.” A Publishers Weekly critic praised the book’s “riveting plot” and asserted: “Readers won’t be able to turn the pages fast enough.”
Red on the River is the second installment in the “Sunrise Lake” series. It finds Vienna Mortenson, a gambler and leader of a rural search and rescue team, falling for Zale Vizzini, an undercover investigator. In an interview with a writer on the Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester website, Feehan noted that the book “required a huge amount of research. I sent my daughter, Denise, who does all of the research that requires travel, to Las Vegas to research the city, but also the surrounding parks since the women in this book do hiking, rock climbing and bouldering. I want scenes that involve those things to feel real to readers. Denise also went with a friend to Tuolumne which is such a beautiful area.”(close new)

Biography
Christine Feehan was born in Ukiah, California. She grew up with three brothers and ten sisters. She spent a lot of time getting in trouble at school for writing instead of doing the things she was supposed to do. Later she forced her ten sisters to read every word.[citation needed]
Feehan's first job was working in a library, then she went on to take journalism classes and worked at the Ukiah Journal.[6]
Feehan trained in martial arts, earning a 3rd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, going on to acquire her instructor's license. She taught martial arts for over twenty years, specializing in women's self-defense.[7]
Career
Time magazine said, "After Bram Stoker, Anne Rice, and Joss Whedon (who created the venerated Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Christine Feehan is the person most credited with popularizing the neck gripper." USA Today called her "The Queen of paranormal romance."[8]
Feehan has been published in multiple languages and in many formats, including audio book, e-book, hardcover and large print. In October 2007 her first manga comic, Dark Hunger, was released in stores. This was the first manga comic released by Berkley Publishing and it made #11 on Publishers Weekly Bestseller's List.[citation needed]
Feehan's ground-breaking book trailer commercials have been shown on TV and in movie theaters.[9] She has been featured on local TV, and appeared on The Montel Williams Show. Dark Legend was featured on the cover of Romantic Times Magazine, Dark Challenge was seen in the movie Kate & Leopold starring Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman, and several of her books appeared in the 2017 movie Happy Death Day.
Feehan has appeared as an honored guest at numerous writers’ conventions, including Romantic Times Convention, Get Caught Reading at Sea Cruise, Celebrate Romance Conference, Emerald City Conference, and numerous Romance Writers of America Conferences. She was also a special guest at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con.[10]
Personal life
Feehan has eleven children and several grandchildren, as well as fourteen brothers and sisters.[11] Her son, Calvert, passed away in the 1990s following a motorcycle accident.
In 2015 her family home in Cobb, California, burned down in the Valley Fire.[citation needed]
Feehan lives in Mendocino, California, near the ocean in the Redwoods. She has several dogs, including two large black Russian terriers.[citation needed]

MEET CHRISTINE
Christine Feehan
I live on the beautiful Northern California coast and draw much inspiration from the beauty around me. I've always been a writer, for as long as I remember. My sisters were forced to read all of my books from the time I could write a story on paper.
I love family. I love my brothers and sisters, my children, my grandchildren and my great grandchildren. My home was always full of kids and children give me so much joy.
I also love my "sisters of the heart", those friends who have supported me through my life, laughed with me, cried with me and loved me regardless of how crazy my life got. I am a strong supporter of women helping each other which is why I became a third degree black belt and taught self-defense to women who'd been abused.
I love people and dogs, good books and great coffee and I'm lucky to know just how blessed I am.
Christine's Notes
Christine FeehanI've been a writer all of my life — it is who I am. I write for myself and always have. The ability to create pictures and emotions with words is such a miracle to me. I read everything; I mean everything! All kinds of books, even encyclopedias. I am fascinated by the written word and I love storytellers. It is a great privilege to be counted one myself.
I write every day and have done so since I was old enough to pick up a pen. (I spent a lot of time getting in trouble at school for writing instead of doing the things I was supposed to do.) Once I create my characters, I try very hard to have them react to situations as they really would. Sometimes I have preconceived ideas of what I would like them to do, but they don't mind me, because it would be out of character for them. They take on a life of their own. It is important to me to have them be real, not perfect people, so they make mistakes we lesser mortals might make.
— Christine Feehan
Christine regularly writes about her books (and all kinds of subjects) in the following places:
QUOTED: "required a huge amount of research. I sent my daughter, Denise, who does all of the research that requires travel, to Las Vegas to research the city, but also the surrounding parks since the women in this book do hiking, rock climbing and bouldering. I want scenes that involve those things to feel real to readers. Denise also went with a friend to Tuolumne which is such a beautiful area."

Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester is happy to shine our Friday spotlight on author Christine Feehan. Christine Feehan is a #1 New York Times and International bestselling author of over 85 novels. She is also a 3rd degree blackbelt who taught self-defense for 20 years, a mother, grandmother and even great-grandmother who lives in the Northern California coast in the Redwoods near the ocean.
Her first book, Dark Prince was originally released in 1999 and she has gone on to write seven series, single titles and novellas.
Christine, where can people find your work? (Besides Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester–though they should totally check here first!)
You can find my work in most bookstores and online. And of course, in libraries.
How can we follow your work and share your awesomeness?
Most of my “awesomeness” happens on the weekend with my grandchildren, but as far as my work goes, I try to be available to my readers in a few different places: Facebook, Instagram, Goodreads and my own online community which was established in 2009 and has over 150,000 members.
What else can we expect from you in the near future?
I’m constantly writing and try to release six books a year. This year I released Savage Road in January, Phantom Game in March. Now I have Shadow Fire which releases April 26th.
The rest of the year is just as busy with-
Red on the River releasing June 28th. The same day my son, Brian Feehan, has his first novel release – Harmony of Fire.
Dark Whisper is out October 11th
Leopard’s Scar is out November 29th
And Recovery Road will release tentatively January 31st of 2023.
What kind of research went into writing this book? What is your favorite research story? What cool facts and findings didn’t make it into the book, but you loved discovering?
For Shadow Fire I didn’t have a lot of research. I had done research for past books that I was able to utilize, but this book really only required extra research about France, contracts for arranged marriages and bombs. You know, the usual. LOL
For Red on the River though that required a huge amount of research. I sent my daughter, Denise, who does all of the research that requires travel, to Las Vegas to research the city, but also the surrounding parks since the women in this book do hiking, rock climbing and bouldering. I want scenes that involve those things to feel real to readers. Denise also went with a friend to Tuolumne which is such a beautiful area.
I also had to research poker and gambling. I am not going to admit to how much help I needed before, during and after writing those scenes but I can promise you no one is going to ask me to any celebrity poker tournaments in the near future. I may not even be asked to play Go Fish! LOL
What was the inspiration for the Shadow Rider series? What were the steps you took to bring it from initial inspiration to the finished books?
For my Shadow Rider series it all started as I was watching my Black Russian Terriers, which look like big black bears, prance and play together in the dog yard as I watched from up on the balcony. It was that time of day when shadows were everywhere and as one dog would run into the shadows it appeared to me that he completely disappeared before coming out in the sunshine several feet away.
I thought it would be cool if we could travel using shadows and come out wherever we need to. And then, my author’s brain said – “What if assassins could ride the shadows to mete out justice?” And the Shadow Rider series was born.
What was the biggest challenge in writing and putting out Shadow Fire? How did you overcome that challenge?
I can’t say that I had a particular challenge in writing Shadow Fire. I’m so comfortable with the characters and knew who the hero was going to be. If there was a challenge, I would say it was that I had no idea I would write Elie’s story. He was a secondary character, not even a cousin, to the Ferraro family which I’d about written previously. Since I hadn’t considered writing his book, I honestly didn’t pay much attention to the details I gave about him. That came back to haunt me. I was locked into some of his personality traits and history.
Christine, thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer our questions! And good luck with Shadow Fire!
QUOTED: "Ordinarily, when I write I have no idea where the hero and heroine are going to take me. I may have a general idea of what I think the book is about and sometimes I’m even right! But I’ve always been more of a 'pantser' and written one page at a time on an adventure with my characters with everything revealing itself as we go. With Murder at Sunrise Lake though, it’s a murder mystery. I knew who did it before I even started. So, I did have to do some plotting with this book and that was very different for me. Most of the story was still organic, but I did have to have some strategy for the mystery in place along the way."

Today on Novels Alive, we welcome #1 New York Times bestselling author, the phenomenal Christine Feehan!
Welcome, Christine! We have a few questions to ask you about writing in general and your latest release, Murder at Sunrise Lake, which will be releasing June 29, 2021.
You have over 80 books in print. In my book, this puts you in the “prolific” category. Have you always wanted to be an author, or was this something you discovered later on in life that you were good at and decided to pursue?
I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller. I’ve been writing since I was a child. And believe me, no one wants to see those stories. They’re terrible! I did, however, force my brothers and sisters to read them.
When I got older and had my first job, which was at a library, I imagined having books in a library and how wonderful that would be, but honestly, I didn’t think about being published or in bookstores. I admired those authors of the books that were in the library and that, to me, was success.
Later, a friend would talk me into turning in one of my books. Dark Prince was picked up by Dorchester. But it wasn’t until the day I walked into my local library and saw my book that I really felt like an author.
All of your books have a paranormal slant, including your upcoming release, Murder at Sunrise Lake. Can you tell us what it is about the paranormal that fascinates you most?
I’ve always been interested in psychic talents. I think people have a degree of psychic talent, which most of us call intuition. Have you ever walked into a room and felt something was off, or stopped what you were doing because you got a feeling something bad was happening? I think most people have that ability, but it’s just not developed.
Most governments, throughout time, have experimented with psychic abilities.
It really fascinates me.
If you had the power to make any of your novels into a feature film, which would it be and why? In that same vein, have any of your books already been optioned for film?
This is a hard one. One of the Drake Sisters books for the overall family feel, fun and community. Or one of the Shadow Rider books since they have so much action in them. Or maybe Murder at Sunrise Lake since I think thrillers make great movies. I just can’t pick! I wonder which of those three your readers would choose?
Is there a particular genre of fiction that you have always wanted to write but haven’t yet tackled?
First, everything I love to read or write has to have some amount of romance in it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the main theme or genre, but it has to be there.
I almost hate to admit this, but I will for you.
I have always wanted to write a Western. I love them! I’ve read every Louis L’Amour book ever written. The problem is…I’m horrible at writing them! I’ve tried. It’s embarrassing, they are so bad. But I do greatly admire those authors who can write them well!
As with the rest of us, you have a real-life to live. So, in your most recent book, what was happening in your life, and how did it influence your writing?
Oh boy, I have two grandchildren with birthday parties I’ve had to prepare for and attend.
My 5-year-old grandson had a Power Ranger’s themed party. At my house. And he told me I had to be a Red Psycho Power Ranger. His heart was set on it so what did I do? I got a Red Psycho Power Ranger costume, and I wore it. No, there are no pictures. Not if my kids know what’s best for them!
Then my 9-year-old granddaughter wanted a high tea birthday party in which we all had to dress up in “fancy dresses”.
I can’t say that learning about fancy dress tea parties or Power Rangers influenced my writing, but I did take a break from writing to participate!
Your upcoming release seems a bit different from your other novels. While it still has a paranormal element, with the protagonist having visions of a killer, there is a murder she is trying to solve. How did writing this book differ from your previous novels?
Ordinarily, when I write I have no idea where the hero and heroine are going to take me. I may have a general idea of what I think the book is about and sometimes I’m even right!
But I’ve always been more of a “pantser” and written one page at a time on an adventure with my characters with everything revealing itself as we go.
With Murder at Sunrise Lake though, it’s a murder mystery. I knew who did it before I even started. So, I did have to do some plotting with this book and that was very different for me. Most of the story was still organic, but I did have to have some strategy for the mystery in place along the way.
What were the books you read that resonated most with you as a child/adolescent?
I have always been a voracious reader even as a child. I loved Sherlock Holmes stories so much. I couldn’t get enough of them. And I’d read them over and over.
I also loved, and still love Gene Stratton Porter. The Harvester was the first romance I ever read.
And I love classics like Jane Austen and Mary Stewart.
What’s one of the most important things you’d like your readers to know about you? What defines you most as an author?
As an author I am meticulous about research, including primary sources. I include fact in my fiction wherever I can.
I also try to improve with each book. I try to improve overall, but I also like to target certain aspects of my writing to improve such as the villain and how to make the villain better, or communities and the feel of them, just some aspect that I want to improve on.
Your upcoming release, Murder at Sunrise Lake, appears to be a single title. Is there any chance this could turn into a series?
In the sense a “series” is a group of books that carry over a theme or arc throughout, this isn’t one. I don’t intend to make this into a series. Having said that, I did fall in love with these characters and enjoyed writing this book. If readers are open to me writing more standalone suspense like this, I’d love to write more!
What’s next for you? What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on a GhostWalker book titled Phantom Game which will be released in 2022. I love the topics that I’ve had to research for this particular book since it’s new to me, which is exciting.
In the evenings I write Torpedo Ink books. Those guys give me a lot of trouble! So, I take my time and I do enjoy writing them. These are characters that really deserve their happy ending.
Thank you so much, Christine, for joining us today. We are so grateful you stopped by and answered our probing questions, and we look forward to reading Murder at Sunrise Lake!
Thank you so much for inviting me. I always appreciate having an opportunity to talk to readers.
Feehan, Christine PHANTOM GAME Berkley (Fiction None) $28.00 3, 1 ISBN: 978-0-593-43908-1
A woman who has been in hiding for years is discovered by the man genetically engineered to be her mate.
Camellia Mist grew up in the clutches of evil scientist Peter Whitney, a man who experimented on humans in an attempt to create a race of supersoldiers. The men he experimented on became GhostWalkers, while the girls he kidnapped were engineered to be their perfect mates. Jonas Harper was part of the first group of GhostWalkers, and now he and the remaining members of their team have created a fortress to keep themselves safe from further experimentation. On a hike near their compound, he senses a compelling presence and tracks it through the forest to Camellia's solitary fortress. Years earlier, when Camellia and the other women escaped from Whitney's clutches, she was betrayed by one of her closest friends in the process. Determined never to trust again, Camellia hid away and focused on harnessing the incredible talents she gained in Whitney's experiments: She can communicate with the entire ecosystem of plants in the forest and can channel the healing properties of the rare flower called the Middlemist Red Camellia. Jonas and Camellia can't resist the powerful compulsion to be together even though they realize that Whitney engineered their connection. This is Feehan's 18th book in the GhostWalker series, and nearly half of the book is pure exposition of previous storylines and characters in the form of Camellia and Jonas talking to each other. They talk face to face, talk telepathically, and finally she teaches him to talk to the plants. Their romance is a fait accompli with little tension or spark, and the external forces threatening the GhostWalkers are conveniently put on hold until Camellia and Jonas run out of things to talk about and have to go fight a battle.
A tedious 400-plus-page plot summary of the GhostWalker series is barren soil for a romance plot.

A man falls in love with a woman who has information about a criminal he's investigating.
Azelie Vargas is alone in the world after her family members were victims of a violent crime. She's making her way, finishing college and finding success as a romance author. Unfortunately, she also has a job she can't quit: When she was 16, her late brother-in-law recommended her as a bookkeeper to Alan Billows, a local club owner who was in a jam. He's a violent man, and Azelie suspects he's a criminal. One day, Azelie is approached by Andrii "Maestro" Federoff at the local coffee shop they both frequent. He's incredibly handsome and she can't believe he could be interested in her. Maestro was raised in Russian schools where the staff abused children with the goal of turning any who survived into emotionless assassins. Decades later, a small group of men and women who survived the torture banded together to form the Torpedo Ink motorcycle club. Now they use their deadly skills and talents to track down criminals and bring them to vigilante justice. Maestro has approached Azelie as part of Torpedo Ink's investigation into Billows, who they suspect is running a human trafficking ring. He's attracted to Azelie but decides not to tell her the truth about his investigation. Feehan's ninth Torpedo Ink book follows the standard formula for the series: instant love plus a sidecar of trauma for everyone. Azelie and Maestro fall for each other immediately, and their story explores how lovers heal in the face of betrayal, even if the cause was just.
A long-running series continues its exploration of the way love can help people survive and thrive through trauma.

Shadow Warrior. By Christine Feehan. June 2019.432p. Jove, paper, $7.99 (9781984803528).
Vittorio Ferraro, international playboy, billionaire, and tabloid cover boy, is unhappy after returning from a secret mission to discover a couple of criminals from a rival crime family in the VIP section of his family's exclusive night club. On top of that, they are negotiating with Haydon, a diminutive master serial killer with an uncanny ability to live in secret in people's homes, who wants to basically sell a woman to cover his debts. When Vittorio steps in, it turns out that Grace Murphy was Haydon's foster sister. When Vittorio tries to save her life, he discovers that, like him, she is a shadow warrior and therefore a possible mate. Everyone and everything Grace has ever showed attachment to has been destroyed by Haydon, so she tries to resist falling in love with Vittorio. With a psychopathic serial killer and exquisitely described BDSM sexual encounters involving jeweled nipple clamps and chains of precious metal, Feehan entrances and pushes boundaries in the fourth entry in the Shadow Riders series.--Diana Tixier Herald

QUOTED: "I want people to have hope. I want them to see that it's their strength that can carry them through."
What inspires the grit and strength of your female characters, such as Julija, the heroine of this story?
I grew up with 10 sisters and an amazing mother who wanted all of us to be strong women. I happen to do martial arts. I'm capable of beating someone up if I have to, or at least I was in my prime. But I don't necessarily think that's the best way to deal with somebody. I believe that women have a quiet strength that is often understated, and I want to show that often in various ways. Women are so strong. I think they can overcome so many things. I've worked with some people who have had terrible things happen to them, and writing is my way of reaching out to others like them and saying, "You can get to this place. There are horrible things that happen, but they make you stronger. You've got it inside you. Reach for it, build on it, and it can make you a stronger person." I want people to have hope. I want them to see that it's their strength that can carry them through.
What drives your writing process?
I'm very disciplined. When I was a child, my father was very disciplined about work--he had to be, he had a lot of kids--so he gave me a very strong work ethic, and then I was in martial arts for years. I learned pretty early on that if I wanted to write and do other things, I had to manage my time well. Also, I've learned how to write a certain way. I sit down and I work at one thing. There's no editing, there's no researching, there's no surfing the internet, I'm not taking calls. All I can do is put words on a page. I'm actually in competition--my son writes as well, and he is fast. He lays some hard words down in an hour, and I'm not going to let him beat me. Sometimes he puts up this whiteboard and taunts me--I have to put my word count up, and he has to put his word count up. After I do my writing, I can edit if I want to. Then in the evening, for fun, I often will just write a story I want to write, by myself. Sometimes I'll put in half an hour, and sometimes I'll be sitting there from seven at night until midnight, just because I like doing it.
You are extremely prolific--how do you write so quickly without sacrificing quality?
That's important to me. I sometimes drive my editor crazy. I have been known to write a whole book and throw the entire book out--and then, starting from page one and not using one single thing from the book before, write the book again. If I say to myself, "This book isn't right," I write it again, even if my editor thinks it's fine. I'm very picky. It has to feel right. I can tell if anyone has messed with my work, because each line really has a rhythm to it. And when they change it? It hits this kind of jangle in my head.

Leopard's Wrath
Christine Feehan. Berkley, $7.99 mass market (432p) ISBN 978-1-984803-54-2
Over-the-top sexuality meets animal instinct in the red-hot 12th romantic fantasy in Feehan's Leopard series (after Leopard's Run). Leopard-shifter Mitya was raised to be a ruthless criminal by his Russian mafia boss father. Now a crime lord based near San Antonio, Tex., Mitya spends his time secretly working to reduce violence from within the criminal underworld. But he and his internal leopard are restless and lonely. One night, Mitya finds Atria, a pre-shift leopard shifter, changing a flat tire on the side of the road and stops to offer his assistance. Ania is on a quest to avenge her murdered family, but she allows her mission to be derailed by lust for Mitya. The twisting plots about Ania's investigation and Mitya's clash with his sadistic father play second fiddle to Ania and Mitya's highly charged erotic encounters as'both of their leopards enter into heat. While some questions are left unanswered as fodder for the next entry in the series, fans will be pleased with the scorching love scenes and satisfying conclusion. Lethal Game
Christine Feehan. Berkley, $28 (448p) ISBN 978-0-593-09976-6
Despite plenty of drama and vibrant secondary characters, Feehan's 16th Ghost Walker novel (after Toxic Game) disappoints with inelegant prose and a wooden central couple. Malichai is a GhostWalker, a soldier physically and psychically enhanced by mad scientist Dr. Whitney, working with a covert military pararescue squad. When a rescue mission goes wrong and almost costs Malichai one of his legs, the women of his chosen family of fellow Ghost Walkers force him to rehabilitate on a beach vacation in San Diego. There he finds himself drawn to Amaryllis, an employee at the B&B where he's staying who has psychic healing powers that lead Malichai to believe she may also be a victim of Dr. Whitney's experiments. Malichai realizes that Amaryllis is in danger from the deranged doctor and calls in his GhostWalker brothers to help protect her. Glimmers of the sexy, dangerous fun Feehan's fans will expect are subsumed in clunky exposition, awkward fight scenes, and overly convenient plotting. Series readers will be glad to revisit familiar faces from the vast GhostWalker universe but won't find much else to hold their attention. Agent: Steve Axelrod, the Axelrod Agency (Mar.)

Vendetta Road
Christine Feehan. Jove, $7.99 mass market (464p), ISBN 978-1-9848-0356-6
Feehan's overlong third Torpedo Ink romance (after Vengeance Road) teems with vigilante bikers and copious amounts of public sex. Isaak "Ice" Koval, secretary of the Torpedo Ink motorcycle club, is trailing suspected pedophiles on the Las Vegas strip when his gaze is snagged by a beautiful, unhappy-looking woman, the very sight of whom gives him his first natural erection in years. Ice is surprised when the same woman, orphaned heiress Soleil Brodeur, later stumbles into the biker bar where Torpedo Ink drinks, fleeing her physically abusive fiance. Ice instantly puts her under his protection and the pair proceed to seduce one another over the course of the night, with Soleil eagerly committing to joining the motorcycle club lifestyle. Feehan's thin plot is barely allowed to breathe between long chunks of backstory and explicit sexual encounters that don't advance the narrative, and the investigation into the pedophile ring is dropped for long chunks of the book. Unlike Soleil, many readers will find Ice's possessiveness ("You're my property... Torpedo Ink will protect you") disturbing rather than romantic. Teetering on the line between romance and erotica, this dramatic story will satisfy die-hard series fans, but turn off casual readers. Agent: Steven Axelrod. the Axelrod Agency. (Feb.)

Leopard's Rage
Christine Feehan. Berkley, $7.99 mass market (480p) ISBN 978-0-593-09984-1
Though bursting with kinky sensuality, Feehan's 13th Leopard romance (after Leopards Wrath) falls short in execution. Shifter Flam be Carver, a rare strawberry leopard who's yet to make her first shift, is devoted to her landscaping business and her secret side gig of rescuing female shifters from abusive situations, though the latter earns her some powerful enemies. After an attack by a male leopard shifter, Flambe turns to brooding, dominant Sevastyan Amurov, a Russian Amur leopard, for support. Sevastyan grew up hard and has a difficult time controlling his inner animal, but he finds solace in rough sex and shibari, the Japanese art of rope bondage. But something about Flambe and her docile leopard call to him--and he's powerless to resist. The convoluted suspense plot never lands on a unifying theme, instead serving as a very thin thread tying together the decadent erotic scenes. Fans of the series will welcome the return of familiar faces, but many will long for a deeper connection with the central relationship. Agent: Meg Ruley, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Nov.)
